The skiing world spoke out on Saturday in support of Austrian ski racer Hans Knauss, who has tested positive for the banned anabolic steroid nandrolone.
The 33-year-old Knauss, giant slalom silver medallist at last year's world championships and one of Austria's most experienced and popular racers, is awaiting the result of a B test and could face a two-year ban.
Austrian ski officials said they were investigating the possibility that Knauss, who has won seven World Cup races in a career stretching back to 1992, had taken a contaminated food supplement in a case similar to that of British tennis player Greg Rusedski.

Goetschl's toughest challengers will be her teammate Michaela Dorfmeister; Italy's Isolde Kostner, a two-time super G world champion, in '96 and '97, who aims to become the first Italian woman to steal the big Crystal globe; and, France's Regine Cavagnoud, 30, one of the veterans on the circuit.

Austrian Stephan Goergl had the fastest time on each run Saturday as he won the GS at World Cup Finals in 2:10.51 and Miller, one day after his historic tie with teammate Daron Rahlves (Sugar Bowl, CA) in the super G, was second in 2:11.19.
And he didn't feel any special pick-me-up or energy transfusion coming into World Cup Finals where he performed so well with a co-victory and two second-place results in three races to clinch the overall title.
He has skied in every World Cup race over the last three seasons; the last time Miller - a Carrabassett Valley (ME) Academy graduate - did not enter a World Cup race was March 6, 2002 when he skipped the downhill at Finals in Lillehammer, Norway; his streak, including Saturday, is at 113 straight races.

Alpine skiing derives its name from the Alps in Europe, where it developed in the late 1800s as a means of moving down snow-covered slopes.
With the skis held at an angle, tips pointed outward, the skier pushes forward off the inside of each ski edge in alternation, using both poles at once.
Ski jumping is a highly specialized Nordic discipline in which competitors ski down a steep ramp, called the inrun, that curves upward at its end, or takeoff point.

Alpine skiing is also a very popular sport, although not as much as in the Alpine countries (Austria, Germany, Slovenia..) because alpine skiing is geographically limited by the low altitude hills or flat lands of most of Sweden and Finland.

In the skiing countries of Europe, the World Cup is viewed with the same combination of traditionalist reverence and feeding-frenzy excitement that is reserved for Major League baseball in the United States.
It is their game, played in their house; it is the province not only of hardcore fans, but of everyman and everywoman, who can quote you statistics on the World Cup leaders with the easy familiarity of a guy at a lunch counter telling you what Jeter's numbers are looking like.
They are very much a part of the circus, in a sense: they're right in the middle of the action with everyone else, the media commotion and the crazy commercialization, the giant inflatable purple cows in the finish area, the drunken fans lobbing snowballs and worse.

Four performance measures were used: Federation International de Ski (F.I.S.) race points, difference between start seed and finish placement (with the results from second seed skiers only), number of skiers who did not finish (DNFs), and the number of skiers who did not qualify for the second of two runs (DNQs).
The results were discussed in terms of their relationship to previous research with sports characterized by high task interdependence as well as potential causal mechanisms contributing to the home advantage in World Cup Alpine Skiing.
