 1060west: August 2005
if you want to know why the 2005 cubs have never had a chance at any point, including april 4, you need look no farther than the fact that korey patterson has been so predictably handed, without any merit as justification, a stunning 352 at-bats this year.
it's statistically naive and quite ridiculous to believe at this point (and was quite some time ago, imo, only moreso now) that 2005 is anything but a dead letter.
After his recent trip back to the NL Obviously this is a tiny sample size, but it should be interesting to see if the trend continues and (as Sloth would say) Capt Tightpants turns into an unreliable reliever again.

Busch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-08)
There will be hundreds of columns, articles or TV specials that will be dedicated to the 40-year history of Busch Stadium, picture and video montages will be everywhere, each home game a new C-List celebrity will remove the ceremonial "Games Remaining"-meter on the outfield wall until it reaches zero.
As is evident by the massive structure being erected next door, 2005 is the stadium’s last season.
As a result, the nostalgia police will be out in force making sure that we take every opportunity to tribute the old ball yard with the appropriate mixture of emotion and reverence.

The landscapes of the NLCS, which offer an unusual and increasingly rare glimpse of the old West, are rapidly being lost to development and urban growth.
This is in keeping with Presidential proclamations and legislation that created the various NLCS units and the overall vision for the System as the home of BLM’s efforts to conserve, protect and restore nationally significant landscapes with outstanding cultural ecological, and scientific values for the benefit of future and current generations.

The 2005 NLCS turned out to be a 4-2 win where the team that looked like it was going to win most of the time eventually won.
When you think about it, anyone at or near 300 wins is a candidate, because anything around a.600 winning percentage or less means around 200 losses, and we have had a lot of guys get high up there in the wins, but with poor winning percentages.
Taking it a step further (or backward), the higher the percentage of those balls which normally turn into outs, the greater the perception that there is an element of "luck" for the ones that turn into hits.

That said, some of his 2005 numbers (H/9; K/9; K/BB) are very similar to what Mulder put up in his age-24 season with the A's, and Mulder has seen those numbers get progressively worse over the past three years.
So there's no sure thing, especially when it comes to pitching, which is, we all know, why Walt made the deal in the first place: Mulder had a track record and Haren didn't, and the Birds were in a "win-now" mode that didn't seem to allow the luxury of a gamble on Haren's maturation.
