Archaeology from the dark side - Salon
Some were followers of "alternative archaeology," especially believers in a lost Atlantis-type civilization deep in antiquity that gave birth to all the known civilizations of early human history.
In the case of archaeology, these movements have channeled that hostility into alternative visions of the human past that engage surprisingly large sectors of the public.
Although both creationism and alternative archaeology have adopted some scientific trappings, they seek ultimate answers to the riddles of human existence on the spiritual or supernatural plane, where scientists cannot and should not venture.

Metamedia: Archaeology meets science studies head on at 4S
Archaeology as a discipline has always had to play a dangerous game, working both to explain and contain the past through scientific means and, at the same time, seeking to explore and manifest history as an interpretive and hermeneutic object.
This panel attempts to describe and explore recent developments in archaeology as a way of reflecting on the issue of representation and the “unruly object.” In the discussion that follows, we will reflect on the relationship between STS and archaeology.
Archaeology has much to contribute in terms of how it attends to issues of material presence, experience and multiplicity.

 Archaeolog: Archaeology and modernity
In short, archaeology could not have existed prior to the modern era because modern thought created the very conditions for the existence of archaeology.
Because modernity created the conditions for archaeology, archaeology is nothing but thoroughly modern, and therefore cannot exist apart from it.
Archaeology, “the discipline of things” is ripe to take center stage in the articulation of this new contract, but this cannot occur if we limit ourselves to modernism’s myth.

The science we're digging: It's a golden age for archaeology -- by Robert Fulford
The first people I knew to be captivated by it were my uncle and aunt from New York, he an architect, she a schoolteacher.
Their postcards from exotic places, the photographs he took, their incessant conversation about the excellence of their guides -- it all bored me. I was too young and too stupid to see that archaeology was among the great enterprises of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Today, just as literature is enjoying the great age of biography, history is experiencing the great age of archaeology.
