2005-06 NHL season - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 2005-06 NHL season is the 88th season (originally the 89th season) of the National Hockey League.
This is the season after the 2004-05 season which was cancelled due to a labor dispute with the NHL Players Association over the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the league and its players.
The NHL season began on October 5, and for the first time in the league's history, all of the league's thirty teams played a game on opening night.

The NHL remained a four-team Canadian league until the 1924-25 season, when a team from Boston (a popular supporter of amateur hockey) became the first U.S. club admitted.
Midway through the season the NHL holds an All-Star Game that features the league’s top players.
Inclusion of NHL players on the Olympic squads of the U.S. and Canadian national teams was a first, as these two countries had previously limited their rosters to amateur players.

His 50th goal of the season came on December 30, 1981 in the final seconds of a 7-5 win against Philadelphia and was his fifth of the game.
On August 9, 1988, in a move that drastically changed the dynamics of the NHL, Gretzky was traded with Marty McSorley and Mike Krushelnyski by the Oilers to the Los Angeles Kings for Jimmy Carson, Martin Gelinas, $15 million cash, and the Kings' first-round draft picks in 1989, 1991, and 1993.

In a prepared statement, NHL VP of media relations Frank Brown said the league factored the potential for a long-term work stoppage into its $60 million option price tag and that the league wasn’t interested in “further devaluing” its product by taking a rights-revenue cut.
