Rounding out my top 5 of 2006, The Hold Steady’s collection of straight forward rock songs about drunken high school parties is as mature in sound and songwriting as the lyrics are entertainingly immature (one song features a repeating chorus of "I’m gonna walk around and drink some more").
Music Unlimited, which I was using avidly for awhile in early 2006, recommended British bands The Rakes and The Editors to me. And both of them ended up in my year-end album list even though the Arctic Monkeys did not (the Arctic Monkeys’; single "Bigger Boys and Stolen Sweethearts" is a classic nonetheless).

Having performed last year at the world famous Julliard School of Music Conservatory in New York, the twenty members of the Michigan Fine Arts Youth Choir were blessed to have their performance recorded for posterity (a live recording is available for purchase thru the MFADS).
This was an opportunity to showcase their clients in front of a live crowd of car lovers, art patrons, and music enthusiasts who, for the most part, were seeing these acts for the first time.

In 2006, I bought in the neighborhood of 180 new-ish albums (I also picked up about an equal number of rather old releases, but those don't really count for this exercise.) That's a whole lot more than last year, and the success ratio was higher.
Instrumental heavily-layered cello music: when she performs live (as at DNA Lounge in November!) she samples and loops herself, so she's playing against multiple copies of herself on a half minute or more of delay.
