The Australian Open will revert to its traditional timeslot in January 2007 after organisers said they had dropped a plan to change the dates.
Four-time Australian Open champion Andre Agassi and current champion Marat Safin have both complained that competitors were often ill-prepared for the event because they were still recovering from niggling injuries from the previous season.
Players have been demanding for years that the Australian Open be moved back to March when the weather is cooler and also to give them a longer break.
