Though Waltrip says the lack of factory support has "probably been a disadvantage" for Davis, the possibility of aligning himself with Toyota — which hasn't announced plans to join Nextel Cup but is expected to do so in 2007 — was part of the attraction.
Waltrip said his respect for Davis, who has been a Cup team owner since 1993, played a role in his decision.
Davis entered two cars in most races from 2000 to 2003 but cut back last season and now fields only Scott Wimmer's No. 22 car.

Borrowing NASCAR's idea of a season-ending championship race, PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem announced yesterday that golf will have its own "playoff" system beginning in 2007.
"Changing the format is a great idea, having a new product is a great idea, and ending in a playoff is a great idea," Davis Love III, one of four player directors on the tour's policy board, said in a statement released by the tour.

McNamee said Australian officials were keen to see the Davis Cup finish earlier in the year to help turn a six-week break into eight weeks.
McNamee said the later starting date would come into effect in 2007 rather than 2006 partly because of a desire to shield the Melbourne Commonwealth Games from scheduling and ticket sales concerns.
However, McNamee added he was also keen to see the season end a week earlier from 2006 onwards.
