The Lovely Bones was notable when it was published for its use of an omniscient narrator, a device thought by some to be dead in most contemporary American fiction.
The Lovely Bones ( 2002), by Alice Sebold, is a novel told in the first person by Susie Salmon, a 14-year-old girl who is raped, murdered and dismembered in the first chapter.
The rights to Bones were obviously a way out of this, and they ended up in the hands of Peter Jackson, fresh from his Lord of the Rings success, by the end of the year.

Last week President Bush signed into law a five-year reauthorization bill for the National Science Foundation (NSF) granting NSF funding increases from its current $4.79 billion in fiscal 2002 to $9.84 billion in fiscal 2007.
Bob Chase, the head of the 2.6 million-member National Education Association, said yesterday that while he welcomes President Bush's attention to teacher quality, he is disappointed that the Administration's proposed 2003 budget actually reduces funding for that purpose.
While the state and local school boards could still put federal block grant money toward science training, the article says, it is feared that funding once set aside for science will now go to "higher priority" areas (such as reading, writing, and math) that are addressed in state tests (science is not currently tested).
