Chief of Coast Artillery Major General Joseph A. Green had recommended reassigning elements of the Harbor Defenses to anti-aircraft duty, but this proposal was rejected.
The War Department had been intending to send three additional AA regiments and two brigade headquarters, however this was not accomplished before the Japanese invasion in December of 1941.
With the exception of those areas covered by the 60th and 200th Coast Artillery (AA) Regiment, the Philippine islands were virtually defenseless against air attack.

In 1940 the 111th Cavalry was redesignated the 200th Coast Artillery Regiment (AA), and the 158th Field Artillery was reorganized as the 104th Antitank Battalion.
In August 1941, the 200th Coast Artillery (AA) was selected for an overseas assignment and by November of that year, they were in combat positions 75 miles north of Manila, Philippine Islands; their mission, to protect the airfield of Clark from air attacks.
Later that night the 515th Coast Artillery (AA) was formed from members of the 200th and sent to Manila to uncrate antiaircraft weapons and form a defense for the city of Manila from the Japanese.

Because the field was surrounded by a large quantity of high explosive bombs of all sizes, C 91st, they hoped, would be accurate and had the only weapons capable of action visible to them.

The 200th Coast Artillery, better known as "The Regiment," was inducted into federal service on 6 January 1941, supposedly for one year of active duty training.
On 17 August 1941, the Regiment was notified that it had been selected for an overseas assignment of great importance and that the choice had been made because of the high satisfactory state of training which had been attained.
On April 9, 1942 the 200th and 515th Coast Artillery, along with the rest of the Bataan defenders began the march of death to prison camps where they would be interned for three and one half years.

Since I was born in Silver City NM and am now a member of the New Mexico National Guard, I request that all new Officers assigned to my Battalion to read Beyond Courage so that they may better understand the importance that history may place on their contirbution to New Mexico and the United States.
I had always imagined that the worst part of their ordeal was the 60-mile forced march (and at war's end in 1945, I traversed that 60 miles in a jeep, a truly terrible ride in the Philippine heat and humidity).
