		It's visual sensibilities leech directly into "Alien" while inside the spacecraft (from the control buttons and displays on the Russian craft, to the lighting of the of EVA room as Baskin and Lithgow take their walk to Discovery, to the smoky "atmosphere" in the interiors when discussing the "troubles" at home).
		While he apes Kubrick, probably to establish a sense of continuity between the two films, he is at his best in the action scenes as the Leanov (sp?) enters Jupiter space.

		The "Dawn of Man Sequence" at the beginning of the film quite explicitly covers our transition from gatherers to hunters and does it all without a word, and in the finale of the film, Kubrick has the guts to show Bowman's encounter with alien intelligence without explaining a thing.
		It was also light years ahead of all film special effects that preceded it, and nothing came close to redefining the look of a "space movie" until the original Star Wars, a decade later.

		Clarke's novel was rather forgettable and this is one of the few examples of a story making a better film than it does a book.
		Hyams has added a whole subtext of East-West tension that was not in Clarke's novel and the film's one failing is in going out by undercutting the grandiose beauty of Jupiter's transformation with banal homilies about international cooperation and universal brotherhood.
		I was lucky enough to see the film in its original release in widescreen - the small screen, even letterbox format, robs the film of much of the real impact and awe it has.
