 hurricane_formation_location
As we noted earlier hurricanes are strongly associated with the tropical oceans, and their movement over a land mass, or into a region with colder ocean temperatures signals the end of their life.
Studies of hurricane formation based upon their place of origin are useful in outing some of the common factors involved in the genesis of hurricanes, but limited in their ability to 'explain' the actual formation process.
Atlantic hurricanes tend to form in the Gulf of Mexico early in the season, in the Eastern Atlantic later in the season.

 NOAA News Online (Story 703)
August 9, 2001 — With hurricane season hitting its peak period, NOAA hurricane forecasters today said they expect normal to slightly above-normal activity for the rest of the 2001 Atlantic hurricane season.
Gerry Bell, hurricane and climate specialist at NOAA's Climate Prediction Center, said the prominent climate factors guiding the slight change to the forecast include: 1) the absence of both El Niño and La Niña (considered a neutral phase), and 2) ongoing decadal wind and water temperature patterns.
These conditions are consistent with the warm phase of the Atlantic multi-decadal mode recently discussed by NOAA Hurricane Research Division meteorologists Stan Goldenberg and Dr. Chris Landsea in the July 20th issue of the journal Science.

Hurricane Charley is the storm which will be remembered in this area not only for its ferocity, but its impact on the future of the area.
Obviously the Atlantic is in the busy period, which dates back to 1995 and could last up to 40 years -- not an encouraging statistic considering how bad it was this year when every storm seemed to threaten Southwest Florida.
People should remember that in 1992, the year Hurricane Andrew struck South Florida, there were six named storms and that is viewed by many as one of the worst seasons ever, considering the monetary cost of the storm.

NOAA forecasters said Tropical Storm Allison - responsible for at least 40 deaths and $5 billion in damages from Texas to Pennsylvania in June - is a dramatic example of why the nation's focus should remain on the impact of a land-falling storm, not just the number of storms that could occur.

 Worldwide Tropical Cyclone Names
Since 1953, Atlantic tropical storms have been named from lists originated by the National Hurricane Center and now maintained and updated by an international committee of the World Meteorological Organization.
The only time that there is a change in the list is if a storm is so deadly or costly that the future use of its name on a different storm would be inappropriate for reasons of sensitivity.
In the event that more than 21 named tropical cyclones occur in the Atlantic basin in a season, additional storms will take names from the Greek alphabet: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and so on.
