village voice > film > 2046 by Michael Atkinson
2046 retains fragments of virtually everything its creator had ever thought it might be, making it less a "project" than an organic coalescence of the artist as a not-so-young melancholic.
2046 is all texture, a conquest of formal content over content-oppressed form, where the camera is in a perpetual state of inquiry, reframing the environment and its characters as a sort of methodological humility, and where visual and aural pathways boomerang down hallways, around corners, over rooftops.
2046 may be a Chinese box of style geysers and earnest meta-irony, but that should not suggest there aren't bleeding humans at the center of it: Gong, Zhang, and Wong (with her plate-sized eyes wandering astray) all deliver masterfully detailed portraits of women ensnared in romantic impossibility.

2046 is the number of a hotel room in "In the Mood for Love" and "2046" and in the latter it is also the name of a destination where people go for their memories and never return.
In his fine review of "2046," Roger Ebert notes that "It is always too early or too late for love in a Wong Kar Wai film, and his characters spend their days in yearnings and regrets." Astute, but not entirely accurate as much of the film dwells on seduction and love-making.
"2046" is sumptuous and surprising and provocative and may not enthrall all viewers, but it is an extremely impressive and intriguing work of a master.

 Slashed Seat Affairs: 2046
In the Mood for Love, 2046 is sort of a sum of Wong Kar Wai's film-making aesthetic and a little push forward at the same time.
But the music in 2046 is different, and certainly much different than In the Mood for Love, with its endlessly repeating melancholy-soaked strings.
2046 presents this sadness and melancholy with the elegance it deserves.

Thoughts on Stuff: Going to 2046
My favorite part of this story was when Faye decides to go to Japan in the present, so Tony tries to write a happy ending, in which the robot would presumably meet up with the person that she loved in the past, however, she just rides on the train, in a never changing state.
2046 is the hotel room where he and Maggie wrote their martial arts serials in ITMFL, and it's the place where the happiest time of his life occurred.

And 2046 is Wong's semi-sequel to In the Mood for Love, more dream than drama, a languid and sometimes frustrating evocation of love and regret, and the most purely romantic film of this or most years.
But it is not his fictional self that is stranded in 2046, but the writer himself who is kept captive by his lost memories, so much so that he cannot quite connect emotionally with the women in his present.

As luscious and absorbing as "2046" is, I sometimes had the feeling that Wong had made it by allowing the theme and atmosphere of "In the Mood for Love" to hang on the vine too long, until they decayed and rotted, started to turn funny colors and give off intoxicating fumes.
"2046" is a highly original, almost visionary work, whatever its flaws, and should be judged on its own merits.

The first is with Bai Ling (Zhang Ziyi, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), a beautiful prostitute living in room 2046 at the Oriental, who is unable to keep her interactions with Chow on a purely professional level.
Wong establishes the dreamy, disjunctive quality of memory at the outset of 2046 by opening with Chow's recitation of passages from his novel, set to spectacular, hyper-colorful images of his future city, rendered in CGI that is less interested in reproducing reality than in evoking mood.
This is logical enough when one considers that, for Chow, room 2046 at the South Pacific (and what happened there) represents a powerful convergence of time and place, one from which his old self never escaped.

The revelation of his journey away from the mythical unchanging 2046 is not given away in bold drama or resolute statement of purpose.
This is likely a reaction to enlarged expectations, and 2046 certainly pumps them up with its pseudo science-fiction interludes (which are intriguing, but not capitalized on), massive cast of "It" names, and allusions to greater historical and cultural significance.

But "2046" sees the man who was once the most exciting film-maker in the world stray into David Lynch territory - not in terms of style, but the fact that he has finally fallen into making a pretentious film for pretentious people.
"2046" carries the familiar meditations on lost love and emotional masochism and detachment that are the staples of all of Wong's previous films, but the deliberately confusing structure make this blend of period drama and surreal sci-fi more frustrating than the joyous puzzles he usually presents.
I guess 2046 is supposed to be about the importance of memory and purports to a future where humans are whizzing around super fast trains in gleaming cities heading for a place where they can recapture their memories.

Some said you had to see it before 2046, although the general consensus was that the unusual romanticism and little details in both films, and actors like Tony Leung and Maggie Chung, made the only real connection(s) (Wong himself has said ironically to see 2046 before In the Mood for Love).
But, for the bulk of the film, the film is not set in any kind of futuristic setting that might be assumed on the outset of going into the film.
Overall, Wong Kar-Wai gives without a shadow of doubt with 2046 that he is a master of compositions, of moods, and of creating characters that are true to themselves, who feel and love but can't seem to reach for it.

Chinese Movie Review | 2046 (2004) Wong Kar Wai, Zhang Ziyi, Faye Wong
"2046" is, in so many ways, such a Wong Kar-Wai film that you could probably figured out the writer/director was behind it even if you didn't see the credits.
With able assistance from famed cinematographer Christopher Doyle (who also lensed Fruit Chan's recent "Dumplings"), "2046" features garish neon colors, splendid 1960s wardrobe, and the themes of loneliness, isolation, unrequited love, and a past that refuses to stay in the past.
In a lot of ways, "2046" represents the entire oeuvre of the director, and would stand very well as a culmination of everything he's done as a filmmaker up to now.

Freed & Borenstein Standards Track [Page 28] RFC 2046 Media Types November 1996 It should be noted that, despite the use of the numbers "822", a "message/rfc822" entity isn't restricted to material in strict conformance to RFC822, nor are the semantics of "message/rfc822" objects restricted to the semantics defined in RFC822.
