The 20th Fighter Group traced its lineage to the 18 October 1917 authorization of the 20th Balloon Group as an inactive element of the Department of the Army Air Arm.
The Department of the Air Force temporarily bestowed the lineage and honors of the 20th Group on the 20th Wing in November 1954.
The 20th Tactical Fighter Wing, along with the associated 55th, 77th, and 79th Tactical Fighter Squadrons were officially redesignated the 20th Fighter Wing and 55th, 77th, and 79th Fighter Squadrons on 1 October 1991.

The ability of the Hawaiian Air Force to perform its mission was affected in the fall of 1941 by a decision of the War Department to send reinforcements to the Philippines and by calls from the Navy Department for assistance in the defense of outlying islands in the Hawaiian area.

The 7th Bombardment Group (Heavy) and 88th Reconnaissance Squadron of the 20th Bombardment Wing was soon reassigned from Hamilton Field, California, to Fort Douglas.
As construction continued at the airfield, negotiations between the Army Air Corps and the Department of the Interior were undertaken for the acquisition of a large tract of government land near Wendover, Utah, along the Utah-Nevada border.
Construction at the base continued for most of the war, and by May 1945 the base consisted of 668 buildings, including a 300-bed hospital, gymnasium, swimming pool, library, chapel, cafeteria, bowling alley, two movie theatres, and 361 housing units for married officers and civilians.

Meanwhile, on 26 January 1956, the wing underwent a major internal reorganization with the inactivation of the 20th Maintenance and Supply Group and the realignment of the 20th Field Maintenance and 20th Supply Squadrons under the air base group which was then redesignated the 20th Support Group.
On 15 June 1962, the 20th Support Group was redesignated as the 20th Combat Support Group and the 20th Supply Squadron was realigned under the wing and its newly appointed office of Deputy Commander for Materiel (DCM).

From July 13-21, 1921, elements of the group (49th and 96th Squadrons) were detached to General Mitchell’s 1st Provisional Air Brigade at Langley Field, Va., to conduct controversial tests to determine the efficiency of aircraft against naval warships.
Early in World War II the group was assigned anti-submarine patrol duty along the Atlantic seaboard and in October 1942 was earmarked for combat.
From August to November 1948, the 2d Bombardment Group, commanded by Col. William E. Eubank, Jr., was deployed on temporary duty to Royal Air Force (RAF) Lakenheath, England in response to the Berlin crisis.

On March 31, 1941, the base was reassigned to the Fourth Air Force, and it was later that year that a flight of twelve B-17s left Hamilton Field for Hickam Field in Hawaii, which lay next to the naval base known as Pearl Harbor.
The base went through a series of command redesignations during this period--to the Continental Air Forces on April 16, 1945, to the Air Defense Command on January 1, 1951, to the Aerospace Defense Command on January 15, 1968, 'and as its usefulness waned, to the Air Force Reserve on October 1, 1973.
The base had been declared excess to Air Force needs as early as December 10, 1944, but it was not closed at that time, and in 1952 it had been declared a "permanent" U.S. Air Force installation.

This group includes the Air Refueling Squadron, which comprises of the E-3B Sentry aircraft, the Airborne Warning and Control Squadron, which comprises of the KC-135R aircraft, and the 12th, 44th, and 67th Fighter Squadrons each of which comprise of eighteen F-15 Eagle jet fighters.
This base consists of an airport in the northwest and a residential area in the southeast.
In the SACO Final Report of December 2, 1996, it was agreed upon that the MC-130 aircraft in Kadena Air Base would be moved from the Navy ramp to the northwestern corner of the main runways by the end of December 1996.

The 431st Fighter-Interceptor Squadron (the "Red Devils") was reassigned from CONUS for base air defense duties in July 1953 with F-86s (the 431st later moved to Zaragoza AB, Spain, in September 1958).
