  Al-Ahram Weekly | Probing the 21st century
In the case of the 20th century, the situation is further complicated by the ascendancy of ideology.
Actually, the 20th century can be called the age of ideology, of closed systems which claimed to use scientific methodology to investigate social and historical reality, even if most of those ideologies originated in previous centuries.
To the extent that ideology was gradually downgraded throughout the second half of the 20th century, technology was significantly upgraded.

Above all, the 20th century is distinguished from most of human history in that its most significant changes were directly or indirectly economic and technological in nature.
The great changes of centuries before the 19th were more connected with ideas, religion or military conquest, and technological advance had only made small changes in the material wealth of ordinary people.
The latter half of the twentieth century was profoundly marred by the competition between the two world superpowers: the United States and the Soviet Union.

The Century was noted for being "on time" and if it ever ran late, there would be serious problems for those responsible for making it late.
Another odd thing about the Century is the fact that even though Buffalo was the midway point for both runs, a passenger would not be able to board the train at Central Terminal.
The Empire, along with the Century, was redesigned in the 30's to fit into the "streamlining" craze that took control of many of the country's railroads.

Passenger rail in the 20th Century - Railway Age, December 1999
Passenger rail entered the 20th Century as a substantial, robust component of the railroad industry.
Over the last half of the 19th Century railroads had expanded into a continental network that reached virtually every point of consequence in North America, and passenger trains had long since emerged as America's principal mode of intercity travel.
At the dawn of the new century, the passenger train had evolved from the primitive equipment of the industry's early years into trains that offered high standards of comfort and luxury to travelers.
