  Early European Music -Part One
Medieval music, or music from the Middle Ages, includes the music from the 7th through the 14th centuries; music of the Renaissance includes the music from the 15th and 16th centuries; and music of the Baroque Era includes the music from the 17th and first half of the 18th century.
Music making is the activity of Everyman, exacting the talents of variously trained amateurs who, with industry and practice, decorate their recreation and leisure in moments of social intercourse.
Thus, since vocal music was composed in accordance with the natural ranges of the human voice and since instruments were used to substitute for (or double) vocal melodies, most instruments were constructed in a family of different sizes in imitation of the different ranges of the human voice.

 20th-Century Music
At the turn of the century, Western music had been distinguished traditionally by functional tonality, what we might loosely call a system whereby music is constructed on a basic scale formation, major or minor, within which hierarchies of sound (intervals, chords) prevail, expressed as points of stability and instability.
The musical world was still dominated by the late romantic aesthetic, and in music one heard increasingly dramatic secondary dominants, modulations, altered chords -- all the expansions of tonality and chromaticism that ultimately would undermine that very tonality.
French music tended to be more fluid and poetical than the metrical "verse" construction of classical Italian and German music: less directional, more coloristic, with its "metrical, rhythmic, and phrase flexibility closely related to the free, non-accentual character of the French language" (Salzman 14).

 20th century music. Russian school.
The real nationalism as a tradition in music was born in the middle of nineteenth century and associated with the "Russian five"*** composers, the musician-innovators (innovators in the sense of Russian music, which unlike Western contemporary music was still amateur).
With his music began a new era of relations between Western and Russian music: during the nineteenth century Western music had influenced Russian style, but now the trends began to flow strongly in the opposite direction - giving a new color to the stream of western music from which it had sprung.
His music was written for himself, and it can be easily seen: not all professional pianist can easily fit their hands on these spread cords, which were just nothing for Rachmaninov's huge hands (he could play a twelfth!).

"Music That Sounds Right" is what the back cover of this disc proclaims; and I suppose your reaction to the disc is going to depend on exactly what you understand that slogan to mean.
Debussy's music is mostly impressions -- of reflections in gently rippling water, of fleeting, scarcely glimpsed movement -- and Fabio Bidini's playing is delicate and colorful.
Bidini's technical abilities are certainly up to the music, although there are occasions when the pulse is slightly irregular as he adjusts to a particularly tricky passage.

As the 150 years known as the Common Practice Period came to an end, a new kind of Western music began to emerge in the dawn of the twentieth century.
Almost all its music compositions adhered to a traditional tonal system; they centered around one pitch class, utilized only major and minor scales, and featured harmonies built with stacks of thirds.
While this system undoubtedly produced some of the best music of the ages, by the 1900s composers were ready to look for other ways to tones and began experimenting with various scales, patterns, and compositional procedures.

A Comparison of Free Jazz to 20th-Century Classical Music
Just as 20th-century classical music extends and separates itself from the tonal language of traditional classical music, so too free jazz "frees" itself from the conventions of functional tonality: "In traditional jazz, the primary purpose of the theme or tune is to provide a harmonic and metrical framework as a basis for improvisation.
Complexity in classical music would eventually reach a point where it began extending the boundaries of its tonal language, as in Wagner's "Tristan," which delays resolution in the piece to an extent that no clear tonic is ever established, paving the way for gradual developments in the direction of atonality and the 12-tone system.
Qualities of folk music are also present in 20th-century classical music as in that of Ligeti, in his use of Hungarian scales in his "Piano Concerto," and in the use of folkloric motifs in his "Violin Concerto," which employs stylized descending motifs of Hungarian music representing grief.
