  2112 (album)
2112 is a rock album released on April 20, 1976 by Rush.
A theme of the albums is also what life can be like "on the road" away from families, having to face numerous and varied fears, insecurities, and temptations.
In the liner notes, the title song is annotated With acknowledgement to the genius of Ayn Rand; it is heavily influenced by her novelette Anthem.

The Daily Vault Album Reviews : 2112
That Rush created a so-called "concept" album in 1976 with their fourth release 2112 is not a surprise, especially for those who had followed the work of Geddy Lee and crew to this point.
Not a true concept album since the whole disc isn't dedicated to one track, 2112 showed how far Rush had come in such a short time, as well as the growing pains the band was going through.
Yet the five "regular" songs on 2112 suggested that Rush had not yet figured out where to go with their musical growth; their next two studio albums would reflect the highs and lows of this period before everything clicked for them.

 Rush - 2112 Review - sputnikmusic
'2112' is the climax of their years as a metal/hard rock band, before venturing into even more ambitious and refined territory, though it's hardly without its own sophistication.
The only problem here is that the album would be infinitely better had 2112 been the only song on here, or had it been expanded to fit both LP sides (A la "Thick as a Brick") The other songs are good but seemed tacked on to lengthen the album, keeping Rush from being truly progressive.
However, 2112 is an extremely well written song as it is. My vote is based on the title track because the rest of the album is really dwarfed by it.

2112 opens with the eerie and mystic "Overture" which sets the tone for the second movement of the 20 minute work, "The Temples of Syrinx." The second movement lays the story of the futuristic society of the Solar Federation in the year 2112, where music and, perhaps, original thought have become outlawed.
The rest of the album, all five songs of it, are similar in feel, but lack the emotion that the masterwork captures.
The album ends out with the anti-climactic, in my humble opinion, "Something for Nothing." When the tune opens it sounds very promising, but you are only to be let down in the end.

Then it sounded, as it does now, as one of the greatest rock albums of all time, the title track in particular is the kind of aural assault that future bands such as Metallica would try to emulate.
Future albums are maybe lyrically better but despite this, it is a great album and all I can say to the few reviewers that have slagged it off is that true greatness is rarely appreciated by all.
This album is pretty well the epitome of 70's geek rock, from the overblown sci-fi concept suite which is "2112" itself to the howlingly unwise kaftans and facial hair in the group photo.

2112 is archetypal high-concept heavy/art-rock, featuring an interconnected suite of songs and a futuristic science fiction-inspired lyrical theme (courtesy of drummer/sole lyricist Neil Peart).
The first half of the album features "2112" proper, a series of interrelated tunes that paint a portrait of a 1984/Brave New World-style future, where music and emotion are outlawed.
The final five tunes are unrelated to the concept piece but continue in a similar musical vein, though a little balladry is mixed in towards the end.

This week, that fantastical rock opera "2112" - which blended synthesizers and sawing guitars with singer Geddy Lee's high-pitch screech - is being preserved for the ages, theoretically, for the year 2112.
The album is one of a dozen historical pieces deemed a "MasterWork" by a committee tasked with preserving the best in Canadian television, film, radio, and music.
The themes of the album were heady stuff - touching on notions of individualism, self-expression and freedom.

This Canadian power trio established their sound with a radio-friendly riff on their first two albums and swung for the cerebral fences on Caress of Steel -- but it wasn't until this fourth trip to the plate that Rush struck a perfect balance between rock and an art place.
The archetypal Rush disc, 2112 is laden with high concept and headbang-inducing moments, rich textures, and thesaurus-emptying tales -- all of which pour from the titular suite, which, back in the days of vinyl, took up an entire album side.
Overall, this album is one of the ultimate Rush albums.
