Bryn Mawr Classical Review 97.7.19   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Medea's murder of her brother Apsyrtus had such a great impact because "Medea not only committed the heinous act of spilling family blood, she also permanently severed all ties to her natal home and the role that it would normally play in her adult life.
Medea's implicit assimilation to other figures by mutual resemblances in diction and action gives her "an almost unbearably focused power and allows her action a certain claim to reciprocal justice" (148).
Galen and Platonist philosophers would view Medea's subjugation of her reason to her passion as an argument that the human tripartite soul possesses an irrational part, whereas Chrysippus and the Stoics use Medea to argue for the unity of the soul (212).

Medea's reference to her planning and contriving (401) would remind the audience of the meaning of the name Medea 'the cunning contriver'.
One version has Medea kill her children accidentally, while another has them killed by the Corinthians; yet another has Creon's kinsmen kill them in revenge for Creon's death and circulate a rumor that Medea had murdered them.

 Euripides' Medea
Even when the poet directs the audience's attention to events elsewhere, as in the case of the deaths of Creon and his daughter in the royal palace, there is no shift of scene.
In the exodos of the play Medea appears with the bodies of her children in a chariot drawn by dragons either on the roof of the skene or suspended from the mechane in the manner of a deus ex machina
She indeed acts with the power, authority and prophetic knowledge of a "god from the machine" when she establishes a festival and ritual in honor of her dead children, reveals her plans for the future and prophesies the death of Jason (1378-1388).

Medea challenges her fate in society as a submissive, subservient woman and acts to demonstrate her power and cleverness.
Medea chose to defy fate and chose to live with the consequences of her actions even though it meant the death of her children and sadness for all involved.

village voice > theater > Marie Christine by Michael Feingold
Medea's a foreign princess; Jason and Creon are worthy opponents of equal status.
(Medea's offered a series of varyingly just settlements, none of which appeases her wrath; Marie Christine's never offered anything except "Do as you're told" and "Get out of town.") As a result, the violence in which the action's suffused always seems to be out of place in the story LaChiusa's telling.
Medea escapes, unpunished, in a chariot drawn by dragons, a warning to us that violence, human and primordial, will be back; Marie Christine, unburdened of her story, has some vague kind of apotheosis about having loved "too much and more," presumably on her way to the gallows.

“Medea in Jerusalem”, a transformation of the Greek work by Euripedes, is Kirby’s 4th play, and it marks his New York debut, presented by 71AC Productions and opening next week at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater.
There’s a doorway from the outside world to the world of the play, and our allusion to Medea being something of a sorcerer is that ours might use a mouse and computer to stir things up.
The essence of “Medea in Jerusalem” and its relevance revolve around the idea of what Kirby calls “the cycle of bigotry, alienation, passionate feelings and destruction, and he hopes people will leave his play with suggestions on how that cycle might be broken.

Medea, in her final scene after the dénouement, becomes once more the descendant of the sun.
Medea’s Dance of Vengeance, scored for a larger orchestra than the original ballet or the concert suite, may be regarded as a tightknit tone poem that represents the musical and dramatic sequence of the stage work as described in Barber’s words, a sort of distillation of the operative emotions.
Motifs and specific sonorities identified with archaism or with contemporary language—ranging from dry and austere to rich and colorful—alternate and at times commingle in building from contemplative suspense to a gradual mounting of intensity and the final unleashing of savage vehemence that takes over and possesses the mind in which it has nested.

Medea's emotions are far more moving than her revenge; Jason's state of mind is more interesting than his calamity.
To emphasize this sense of otherness, ritual plays a huge part in Kontouri's "Medea." One of her decisive gestures is the use of two puppets, instead of real human beings, to play the parts of the children.
Not only is "Medea" an influential and innovational tragedy in the Western canon, it is also one of the most devouring roles in dramatic literature.

The all-fl cast features a chorus of eleven tattooed, body-painted Corinthian women, who will employ dance and song to reinvent the choral passages as the ritualistic counterpoint to the dramatic story line they were originally intended to be.
MEDEA will begin performances on Friday, April 5th, and will continue through Sunday, April 28th.

The word indirectly is worth underscoring, because, with the exception of Aeschylus's Persians, the extant Greek tragedies resist addressing contemporary events by name—the sagas of a few legendary families and the myths surrounding the Trojan War provided material enough to illustrate universal patterns in society's chronic waywardness.
Medea in Jerusalem, a new play by Roger Kirby, wants to have its classical distance and topicality too.
