British 21st Army Group - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Twenty-first Army Group of the British and Canadian forces in the United Kingdom that were assigned for the invasion of Europe, was established in London in July 1943.
The Canadian First Army wheeled left and liberated northern Holland, the British Second Army occupied much of north-west Germany and liberated Denmark and the US Ninth Army formed the northern arm of the encirclement of German forces in the Ruhr pocket and on 4 April reverted to Bradley's 12th Army Group.
It was renamed the British Army of the Rhine on 25 August 1945 and eventually formed the nucleus of the British forces stationed in Germany throughout the Cold War.

Army group - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An army group is a military organization (formation) consisting of several field armies, and is supposed to be self-sufficient for indefinite periods.
An Army Group is the largest field organization handled by a single commander in modern warfare, and usually includes between 400,000 and 1,500,000 troops.
For example in 1944–45 during the Second World War, the Southern Group of Armies (U.S. 6th Army Group) was comprised of the US Seventh Army and the French First Army; and Montgomery's 21st Army Group was comprised of the British Second Army, the Canadian First Army, and the US Ninth Army.

When the Germans attacked during the Battle of the Bulge, First Army found itself on the north side of the salient, and thus isolated from 12th Army Group, its commanding authority.
First Army was slated to deploy to the far east to take part in Operation Coronet, the second phase of the invasion of Japan, but the Japanese surrender in August caused those plans to be cancelled.

The Army Group actually had command of all US forces involved in the Normandy landings as well, and Montgomery was the overall ground forces commander, until the bridgehead had expanded enough to allow additional formations ashore.
The American 12th Army Group was activated under General Omar Bradley as the Battle of Normandy came to a close, that formation being activated on 1 Sep 1944, leaving the 21st Army Group with the First Canadian Army and 2nd British Army under command.
After the German surrender, 21st Army Group was converted into the headquarters for the British zone of occupation in West Germany, being redesignated the British Army of the Rhine on 25 Aug 1945, and would eventually form the nucleus of the British forces stationed in Germany throughout the Cold War.

After the 12th Army Group's crossing of the Rhine ahead of the 21st Army Group (7 March 1945), the 12th Army Group planned operations to help encircle the Ruhr, an operation in which 325,000 prisoners were taken.
This work is a good overview of army group development, and the practical exercises have value in that they reveal the nature of instruction on the subject in the 1920s.

The People's Liberation Army was founded on August 1, 1927 during the Nanchang Uprising when troops of the Kuomintang (KMT) rebelled under the leadership of Zhu De and Zhou Enlai at the end of the first Kuomintang-Communist alliance, a fallout which developed into the Chinese Civil War.

Montgomery and "Colossal Cracks" — www.greenwood.com
The chapters devoted to Montgomery's relationship to his army and corps commanders are essential to a better understanding of the dynamics of the British high command.
Description: A reinterpretation of the British Army's conduct in the crucial 1944-45 Northwest Europe campaign, this work examines systematically the "Colossal Cracks" operational technique employed by Montgomery's Anglo-Canadian 21st Army Group and demonstrates the key significance that morale and casualty concerns exerted on this technique.
The cautious, firepower-laden approach used by the 21st Army Group was both crude and a double-edged sword; however, despite these weaknesses, "Colossal Cracks" represented an appropriate technique given the nature of British war aims and the relative capabilities of the forces involved.
