In the fifteen years since 2300AD was published canon has come to contradict what we know and believe regarding the universe.
After over a decade without new material for 2300AD, it is much better to build on canon rather than to try to tear it down.

 Sharp Blue: Per ardua ad astra - Richard Baker
I think Ad Astra is considerably harder sf than any of those though, and it has a much larger scope in terms of time and space: as its title promises, it's really the story of the transformation of humanity from a Solar civilisation to a galactic civilisation.
2300AD was, if I remember correctly, an inspiration for the first push to produce Ad Astra - even if it was only the date - to see what _could_ be achieved in the next 300 years.
2300AD was, of course, hampered by being set after Twilight: 2000.

2300AD back in the day was an interesting concept for an RPG.
The premise of the 2300AD universe is that WWIII happened and the superpowers basically nullified themselves.
At the time of publication for ECS cyberpunk was an influential genre of science fiction and not really much of the 2300AD setting.

When I started playing 2300AD I found it offered one of the best hard sci-fi settings around but I was disappointed by the limitations of the rules system.
Having started as a simple extension to the 2300AD rules, this system grew, in time, into an original set of rules which balances playability and realism quite effectively and which I found useful in a number of different campaigns, including non sci-fi settings.
Converted stats of 2300AD equipment and vehicules to MESS are also included.

As for converting Botany Bay, Nyotekundu and the like to real star names, I have access to most of the source material, including the Colonial Atlas, which gives you the real names to most of the renamed stars.
It has been said that the 2300AD near star list has a number of rather significant errors in it.

If they're in your neighbourhood spaceside, you shoot the fuckers before they shoot you or you run away terribly fast.
When I played 2300AD, our campaign started on the Chinese Arm for reasons which are complicated.
We switched over to the French Arm (Aurore, in particular) for a while and found out that, while at least initially the Kafers were fun, they rapidly became boring because they were just a tactical problem repeated ad infinitum.

The 2300AD RPG is hard military-style sci-fi with only the conceit of the "stutterwarp" FTL system.
Otherwise it is all real-world physics in a world setting 300 years after a limited-exchange nuclear war called "Twilight War" between NATO and the Warsaw Pact.
One of the major national powers in 2300AD is France, which pulled out of NATO at the beginning of the Twilight War because it did not want a reunited Germany.

In 2300ad with both on and off world population of over a billion,it has the cash to maintain a vast empire.
Its as industrialized as >Germany (not its equal but pretty darn close) >Technology wise, they might not have the same kind of cash as the US to >throught into R&D but their military industry >is just as developed as the US especially in the aerospace field.
The fact that the "great game" produced such a result suggests to me that the "great game" wasn't that accurate simulation (not that I'd expect anyone to be able to do an accurate simulation of that sort--it's impossibleo n the face of it, because single individuals don't control entire countries in real life).

In the game, adventurers could travel from solar system to solar system, providing that they were no further than 7.7 light years (ly) apart.

It is set in the same fictional universe as Twilight:2000 but 300 years on.
The first edition was called Traveller:2300 but this was confusing for some who thought it had something to do with the award winning Traveller RPG (also by GDW), and so the second edition bore the name 2300AD.
Since the demise of GDW in 1996 ownership of 2300AD has passed through a number of hands and now belongs to Far Future Enterprises.

I appreciate the influence of Traveller, but I was never a fan - and a brief stab at Traveller 2300AD put me right off it.
In every version of the game since then, it was standard for the character to be injured, and leave whatever service they were in.
Aside from that, Traveller 2300AD was, in spite of the similar title, a completely different game.
