In 2004,of all the Xinjiang professionals, 12.2% are engineers, 7.2 % are agricultural technicians, 15.1% are medical and health professionals, 0.6% are scientists and 52.4% are teachers and staff of schools.
The funds that Xinjiang scientific and technological institutions, higher education institutions and enterprises used for research and development were 2.547 billion yuan, increasing 87.9% than that of 2000.
In order to raise the education level of Xinjiang minority ethnic groups, the state implemented a project that universities of inland China should aid Xinjiang higher learning institutions in their development in 1989, and from then on, about more than 10000 college students of Xinjiang minority ethnic groups graduated from those universities.

I have been to Xinjiang but I saw mostly desert.
