On 28 October 1999 the squadron was reactivated at AFB Bloemspruit to as an attack helicopter squadron, equipped with the new Rooivalk.
Reformed in 1946 as a Ventura equipped bomber squadron at Swartkops, the squadron was renumbered as 25 Squadron on 1 January 1951.

 Martin B-26 Marauder in South African Service, By Roger Best.
The 24th Squadron was selected as the first squadron to be converted to B26’s and flew their last raid with their beloved Bostons on the 8th November 1943 from Tortorella near Foggia Main, Italy.
By the beginning of March 1944 3 Wing SAAF was under the command of Col.A.J. "Jack" Mossop and consisted of 12 squadron with Marauders, 21 Squadron with Baltimores and 24 Squadron at Gambut in North Africa with Marauders.
The birth of 30 Squadron SAAF was officially recorded as 12th August 1944.

The Squadron re-equipped with the Mirage F1AZ's in 1976.
With the collapse of the Axis, the squadron was disbanded in mid 1945.
The squadron was re-established on 8th Desember 1980 at AFB Ysterplaat with the transfer and renumbering of 'A' Flight, 15 Squadron from Swartkop, operating the Super Frelon and Puma.

 Sqn Histories 500-520_P
Formed as a Special Reserve squadron at Manston on 16 March 1931, it was composed of a mixture of regular and reserve personnel and was allocated to the night bomber role equipped with Virginias.
On 25 May 1936 the squadron was transferred to the Auxiliary Air Force and in February 1937, Hinds replaced the Harts, but on 7 November 1938 the squadron was allocated the new role of General Reconnaissance and was transferred to coastal Command.
However, the squadron never fully re-equipped as it was disbanded on 1 November 1938, it's personnel being used to form the nucleus of No 616 (South Yorkshire) Squadron AuxAF at Doncaster.

 SAAF MUSTANGS
The SAAF Museum has been attempting to aquire examlples of important aircraft flown by the SAAF during its history, and one of the ex-Dominican F-51Ds was located in Florida, USA, in 1986 where the remaining aircraft had gone after resale.
However in a flamboyant gesture of appeasement by Trujillo, the fighter squadron operating both F-51Ds and F-47 Thunderbolts was redesignated Esquadron de Caza Ramfis and later Grupo de Caza Ramfis.
The SAAF Museum brought a Mustang in the USA in 1987, and when it was shipped to Cape Town where it arrived 14 November 1987.

 Army Air Forces in World War II
The 46th and 72d Fighter Squadrons, 15th Fighter Group, transfer from Canton Island in the Phoenix Islands and Wheeler Field, Territory of Hawaii respectively to Makin Island in the Gilbert Islands with P-39's.
The 531st Fighter-Bomber Squadron, Seventh Air Force, transfers from Canton Island in the Phoenix Islands to Makin Island in the Gilbert Islands with A-24's.
Personnel and equipment of the 154th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron and the Weather Reconnaissance Detachment are subsequently integrated, and the unit is redesignated the 154th Weather Reconnaissance Squadron (Medium) on 12 May 44.

24 Squadron’s unofficial motto – “Hit the floor - it’s 24” – says something about the spirit of the crews who were fortunate enough to be associated with this great aircraft.
The members of 24 Squadron referred to one another as ‘the Pirates’ – appropriate when considering the connotation of the aircraft’s name and its primary task, which was to swoop down on and knock out enemy shipping.
The SAAF version of the Buccaneer included a rocket pack to equip it for South Africa’s hot and high conditions.

On 1 May 1965, the renowned World War II SAAF squadron, No. 24, was re-formed at the Lossiemouth Royal Naval Air Station in Scotland, and there the squadron commander (Commandant Bob Rogers, later Chief of the SAAF) and his senior officers started converting to Mark I Buccaneers.
The SAAF was called in and plans were laid to open up the Wafra's ballast tank, which was filled with compressed air, and also her bow, so that she would sink in one piece rather than catch fire and explode.
Amid a glare of publicity (the Minister of Defence and a number of high officials were circling the area near by in the SAAF Viscount, not to mention two Shackletons loaded with journalists), two Buccaneers dived on the Wafra and fired four Nord AS3O missiles.

Major L.A. Wilmot was to command No. 1 Squadron, SAAF which had been defending Khartoum since August, and Captain K.W. Driver was posted with him to the Squadron on 13 Decemher 1940.
No.1 Squadron records showed 48 enemy aircraft destroyed, and 57 damaged, in combat, and although in RAF combat records it was not usual to list such claims, 53 destroyed on the ground, for the loss of six pilots killed.
Ken Driver moved to Egypt with the Squadron on 8 April (having flown to Khartoum on 6th) to defend Alexandria from the airfield at Amriya, to the south of the city, and east of El Alamein (an obscure area of which few people had heard at that time).

By 1943, the RAF had five Squadrons equipped with Marauders viz:- 14, 39, 326, 327 and 454 although by mid-1944 only No. 14 was operating from Foggia in Italy, the others having been withdrawn to the Western Front.
The authorities decided to equip 5 Squadrons of the SAAF with Marauders in late 1943 and early 1944.
My Squadron, No. 24, was converted from 4-man Bostons to 6-man Marauders in December 1943 whilst operating from Gambut (situated in Libya halfway between Bardia and Tobruk) where I joined the Squadron in early May 1944, direct from final training but missing Operational Training Unit.

The squadron is operating a school for fighter pilots until 23 Sep with P-38's, P-39's, P-40's and Spitfires.
This squadron transitions for fighters to B-17's and serves as a radar detection and countermeasures unit until Sep 44.
The 15th Bombardment Squadron (Light), and 311th Bombardment Squadron (Dive), Twelfth Air Force, are disbanded at Nouvion, Algeria and Gela, Sicily respectively.

Following a recce over Gambut during the night by a Ju88 and the early morning gong for an immediate stand-by, 24 Squadron crews were on tenderhooks as the morning of 1S` June went by without a take-off.
The perfect recce of 454 Squadron, the excellent work on the part of the bombers and their escorts, especially 15 and 24 S.A.A.F and the magnificent show of the Beaufighters may result in one of the greatest defeats the enemy has suffered in the Aegean.
Shortly afterwards my Squadron and some of the others, were re-assigned to Italy whilst Crete and the other Greek Islands had to wait for almost a year for liberation.

However, as the result of the initial reduction in SAAF assets and personnel, 25 Squadron and 27 Squadron were amalgamated with 35 Squadron on 31 December 1990.
It is heart warming to note that the members of 35 Squadron have remained dedicated to their tasks, even though they are rather limited in performing the full spectrum of maritime operations.

The 8th FBG and its squadrons moved to South Korea on August 11, 1950, while the wing remained in Japan and assumed operational control of other combat units.
From early 1951 until January 1953, the group and its tactical squadrons, moving from base to base in South Korea, operated separately from the rest of the 18th FBW.
Between rotations to South Korea, those squadrons remaining in Japan continued to fly air defense missions under control of the 116th Wing headquarters through the first half of 1952.

In French Morocco, the 345th and 346th Fighter Squadrons, 350th Fighter Group, arrive at Casablanca, the air echelon from the UK with P-39s and P-400s and the ground echelon from the US; the 379th and 428th Bombardment Squadrons (Medium), 310th Bombardment Group (Medium), arrive at Mediouna with B-25s.
The squadron will enter combat on 30 Dec. HQ 95th, 96th and 97th Fighter Squadrons, 82d Fighter Group with P-38s is established at Tafaraoui, Algeria upon arrival from the UK.

He came from 15 Squadron at Durban and was on detached duty as CO of the MAOT at Ruacana.
The SAAF had a more laid back approach to a lot of things, but one always got the impression that they knew what they were up to and did their work very professionally.
Captain Prins told the policemen that there was a public hospital three hundred meters away and that the SAAF could not be expected to send an expensive helicopter at night at the same time endangering the lives of its crew for a non military related injury.

 Friedrich Körner
On 19 March, 1942, an RAF Curtiss P-40, possibly of 80 Squadron, 7 SAAF Wing, was downed by Körner over the sea east of Tobruk.
Once the initial shock and tension of a younger pilot's first aerial victory wore off, the fledgling fighter pilots were then better able to effectively put their air combat skills to the test.
Körner was a firm believer that it was far better to have 10 pilots in a squadron with 10 kills each, than to have just one greedy pilot with 30-40 kills.

They plan to purchase some 28 JAS-39 Gripen and 24 Hawks.

Above is 412, mounted on a plinth outside the living quarters at the Waterkloof base that was home to the Buccaneers of 24 squadron.
She's now preserved at the SAAF base at Ysterplaat.
Normally protected from the elements by the half-hangar you see here, this sort of protection is really a must with the bright sun in South Africa, but even so the the starboard side of the canopy, exposed to the bright sun through most of the day, is now clouding over.

South Africa was the only overseas country to order the Buccaneer and 16 were ordered by the South African Air Force designated S.Mk.50, which was a land-based export variant equivalent of the S.Mk.2, without hydraulic wing-folding gear.
