The dynasty began with Snefru (2575 BC-2551 BC), who built three pyramids, one mysterious pyramid in Meidum (a failure), the famous Bent Pyramid in Dashur (another failure) and the small Red Pyramid, also in Dashur.
The 5th dynasty began with Userkhaf (2465 BC-2458 BC), who initiated terrible reforms weakening the power of Pharaoh and the central government.

Radiocarbon dates recovered from two of the features (2461-2148 BC and 2587-2458 BC at 2 s) indicated that these belonged to a later phase of activity than the structures.
