24 bit is not 1/3 more than 16 bit because you're talking about binary.
16 bit gives you 65,536 (2 to the 16th power) different possible levels whereas 24 bit gives you 16,777,216 (2 to the 24th power) different levels.
Another point worth mentioning is that sample rate and bit depth are two seperate animals and affect different aspects of the recorded signal.

If we were to record at 24 bit then we would have over 16777216 levels for a slice of audio frozen in a single moment of time.
If something is recorded at 24 bits then it is using more bits in a file and as such the files are going to be much bigger.
Audio recorded at a lower bit depth will sound grainy and less defined therefore recording audio at 24 bit will be of a higher quality than something recorded at 16 bit.

A 24 bit sound card when playing a 16 bit audio file will shuffle up the bits so that you are still using the low noise capability of a 24 bit sound card.
The mp3 lame encoder can only accept data in 16 bits, and if your original source of the audio was an audio cd (also 16 bits) there is no point in trying for 24 bits.
I do not want to convert the bit to 24 or 16, that is not my goal but is my issue.

The new D1600MkII is a 24 bit machine (16 playback tracks at 24 bit)...however, the DX32 thing is a 16 bit machine as far as I'm concerned (and most people) because to play back 32 tracks, you must record at 16 bits.
Both the 16 bit (for CD) and 24 bit projects that generated the mp3s sound considerably better than the mp3s.
At 24 bit, 4 tracks can be recorded simultainiously, and 8 tracks can be played back simultainiously.

There's really no point for it since the human ear can't distinguish a quality greater than 24 bits, and in most cases even 16 bits is acceptable as the final medium.
So, yes, it is just your imagination that recording in 32 bit is better, as the output of your hardware is most likely at most 24 bit anyway.
Anyway, my point is that I don't believe any recording hardware (unless uber pro maybe) these days supports higher than 24 bit recording, and there really isn't much point to go higher than that as you won't hear the different between 24 and 32 bit anyway.

My advice is to record at 24 bits/44.1 at minimum and go up to a sample rate of 88.2 or 96 if you think your material warrants it (and you have the disk space).
Today, your audio interface is probably 24 bit and allows you to select sample rate of your choice, 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96 and even 192khz.

The 16 bit versions are swamped with gross distortions, clock noises, ect, with the worst of it modulating with the signal(!), while the 24 bit's are rather quiet, mostly some analog sounding hiss in the background.
I tried 24 bit ad-da recording via light pipe to/from the RME and ADAT (chopped to 16 bit, -60ish).
What was more surprising, especially in 16 bit mode, was that the signal was coherent and 'normal' sounding.
