24p - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In particular, 24P HD already provides a reasonably viable alternative to the film format and may replace it altogether in the future.
Many 24p productions, especially those that are made only for TV and video distribution, actually have a frame rate of 23.97 FPS (more precise, 24*1000/1001).
They are still called 24p for simplicity, and because of that in many cases saying "24p" implies that the frame rate is actually 23.97 FPS.

24p might be better for locked-down shots and talking heads, while 60i might be better for pans, zooms and football games.
You might think that shooting 24p would be a great advantage to indie filmmakers who want to transfer their video to the large screen.
A 24p camera will not magically transform you into a filmmaker, but the affordable option to shoot 24p is a wonderful development for consumer video.

Similarly, with 24p you can create the same feel, but you lose something tangible with the move to digital, and there are those that argue no matter how much you play around with frame rates, interlacing, and filters, film and digital are and will always remain things apart.
It's not meant to be comprehensive overview of 24p, so much as a meaningful discussion from the perspective of professionals who have been working in the field for a long time, and an exploration of the place of 24p in commercial videography today.
With 24p, you can produce a DVD at any time in the process, and if you don't intend to make a film, like most event videographers, then it is a cheaper option.

 24P and FILMLOOK® FAQ
24P, or more accurately 24 frame progressive image video, is a method of capturing images very similar to the way a film camera does, by recording images 24 times per second without the artifacts an interlaced video camera can introduce.
When shooting 24P video it is sometimes necessary to engage in some color correction or color enhancement in order to make minor adjustments in exposure level, gamma, or color balance.
Despite the hype surrounding 24P cameras, it is still a video image that is being recorded by the camera.

There are some differences, but creating a good 24P project is subject to many of the same rules as creating a good film project.
It also has some characteristics that are not in film: it does not have grain, it currently doesn't have the latitude of speed and exposure that film offers, and because it is electronic, it is very easy to work with.
A good 24p project does not throw out all of the lessons that have been learned producing on film over many decades, but adds functionality that only a digital medium can provide.

In order to edit on a 24p timeline, the footage captured on a dvx100 must be reverse-telecined from 60i back to 24p.
The only difference is, when you work on a true 24p timeline, you can transfer to film without doing a reverse telecine, or you can create a 24p DVD (with the appropriate compressor), which can be viewed on progressive scan DVD players, monitors, displays.
The movie is in 24p (therefore no interlacing) and the stuff in the behind-the-scenes is usually in 60i (short for 60 fields interlaced).

While 24p has been mainly thought of as a medium for recorded and edited programs, an unexpected phenomenon, Chiolis said, has been the incorporation of 24p in live television events such as the recent MTV Music Awards, where 24p segments were intercut with 1080/60i.

24p Advanced footage can be turned into pure 24p footage more cleanly than 24p standard footage, because every frame in the pure 24p timeline is pulled from a whole frame in the 24p Advanced footage, whereas the C frame in 24p Standard footage is split across two different source frames as discussed above.
Running the 24p Advanced footage from a “perfectly synced” FCP capture through DVFilm's Maker with zero frames delay correction and loading into a 24p FCP sequence shows an apparent advance of two frames, or four fields – just as Marcus van Bavel at DVFilm observes.

 POV-24P Primer - Part 1
I’m referring to 24P, the new high definition format that has been a hot topic of discussion since it was unveiled last year.
24P allows you to finish your project in a single 24 frame-per-second environment and create a single master that can be used to produce everything else you’ll need: all the HD formats, NTSC, PAL, and yes, film.
In addition, there is no drop-frame timecode in the 24P world, which means the actual clock running time on tape is not accurate, just like non-drop timecode for NTSC formats.

Panasonic Professional Video Products - Applications: DV
Most prime time television episodic programs are shot in 24p - either 35mm film or HD video - and therefore a very large audience exists that equates the "24p look" with very high production values.
This is again because the AG-DVX100 provides a built in "telecine" process which converts the 24p video signal captured by the CCD based imager to an NTSC compatible signal for editing and monitoring.
In order to maintain complete compatibility with existing non-linear NTSC based editing systems, the precise 24p image capture rate of the AG-DVX100 is 23.976fps, which is commonly known as 23.98fps.

After editing video at 24p, it can be turned directly into a 24p DVD which allows you to achieve a higher quality end result as the MPEG2 compression has less frames to compress per second, or you can add 3:2 pulldown back to the video to allow it to be delivered on conventional video tape.
If you are using the 24p Advanced mode, the flags that tell Final Cut Pro which frames to remove are embedded in the DV data stream coming of tape, and this information is passed to Final Cut Pro no matter which deck or DV camera you choose to use to capture from.
As part of the Standards Conversion http://www.nattress.com package, there is a plugin which directly converts 24p Advanced footage (as long as it hasn’t had it’s pulldown removed) to 24p Normal footage, and is a quick way to fix footage shot in the wrong mode.

 Animation and 24P
One thing you don't want to do is mix 24p animations (with 3:2 pull-down for 29.97 FPS video) with natural 29.97 interlaced clips (like shot video).
Likewise, you don't want to mix a 29.97 FPS interlaced animation with clips that were shot on film that keep their 24p dynamics with 3:2 pull-down.
The only time mixing 24p and 29.97 FPS interlaced media seems to work is when the production is shot on 24p (film) and the ending credit crawl (rendered at 29.97 with interlacing) move upward.

 24P Camera Tests
Tested during the Winter of 2002, the Sony and Panasonic 24P camera stills available on this site were intended to demonstrate camera capabilities in areas such as color saturation, color desaturation, deep fls, compressed fls and expanded highlights.
One may ask, why not lower the image to zero and get a 100% image and the simple answer is that such a dramatic manipulation would likely introduce noise into the picture and could "stretch" the fls to distortion levels.
In High Definition Video, highlight level menus are often referred to as the "knee." The knee on 24P cameras can be manipulated for "film-like" responses or to provide a very short highlight curve resulting in compressed highlights.

Panasonic AG-DVX100 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Panasonic has created a complete line of cameras which support recording in 24p, which is an analog of how film cameras record frames, for independent film production.
Progressive video is rare on cameras at this price point (MSRP 3,995 USD, though the camera can be had for around 3,500 USD street price) and is different from other consumer and prosumer cameras, which typically record in interlaced video.
As HD is becoming more popular among prosumers, Panasonic has meanwhile released the Panasonic AG-HVX200, a 24p camcorder that records full 1080p HD video on P2 chips, making it one of the first professional solid state memory based camcorders on the prosumer market.
