The 69th Academy Awards were dominated by movies produced by independent studios, financed outside of mainstream Hollywood, leading to 1996 being dubbed "The Year of the Independents".
The big winner at the ceremony was Anthony Minghella's The English Patient, which had received 12 nominations and won 9 awards including Best Picture.
Other notable movies to be honoured at the ceremony included Fargo, which had been nominated for 7 awards and won 2, Shine, which had been nominated for 7 awards and won just one, and Jerry Maguire, which had been nominated for 5 awards and also won just one.

Academy Awards in Literature, which honor writers of exceptional talent, were given to seven U.S. poets and fiction writers.
The awards are given annually to recognize a book of poetry or fiction and a scholarly book that make "important contributions to our understanding of racism." For the 1999 award, copies of books published in 1998 should be sent to the judges by January 31, 1999.

For BBC Radio 1, it was their most successful Sony Awards ever, taking a total of five Golds, including the supreme title of UK Station of the Year - the first time the Station has won this award in the 24 year history of the Sony Radio Academy Awards.

Two USC School of Cinema-Television students won bronze medals for their student films that competed in the 24th Annual Student Academy Awards at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
The awards honored Jennifer Haskin-O'Reggio and Chris Angel during the sold-out event in Beverly Hills on June 8, which was hosted by "Apollo 13" and "The Right Stuff" star Ed Harris.
