The 24th Infantry Regiment was organized on 1 November 1869 from the 38th and 41st Infantry Regiments.
In the spring of 1944, the 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry (Deuce-Four) was attached to the 37th Infantry Division and fought on Bougainville Island.
The 24th Infantry fought throughout the entire Korean peninsula, from the defense of the "Pusan perimeter" to its breakout and the pursuit of communist forces well into North Korea, to the Chinese counteroffensives, and finally to U.N. counteroffensives that stabilized near the current Demilitarized Zone.

The 24th Infantry Regiment saw combat during the Korean War and was the last segregated regiment to engage in combat.

The Regiment, then in command of Captain Edwards, all the field officers having been killed or wounded, marched from the battlefield July 6, in pursuit of the fleeing Confederates, then crossed the Potomac River, reaching the Rappahanock River on Aug. 1st.
During the summer and fall the Regiment made a number of long marches, occupied important positions, coming in contact with the Confederates at Mine Run, where it distinguished itself by driving the defenders into their works, capturing a number of prisoners.
From the Wilderness the Regiment marched to Spottsylvania, where it was constantly under fire until the 21st of May, losing 11 killed, 39 wounded.

The 23rd Marine Regiment began as infantry detached from the 3rd Marine Division in February 1943, the same month that an artillery battalion of the 12th Marines became the genesis of the 14th Marines and engineer elements of the 19th Marines formed the nucleus of the 20th Marines.
In March the 24th Marine Regiment was organized, and then in May it was split in two to supply the men for the 25th Marines.
The units were originally separated, however, with the 24th Marines and a variety of reinforcing units (engineer, artillery, medical, motor transport, special weapons, tanks, etc.) at Camp Pendleton in California.

his regiment was ready for the field in December, 1863, and left Philadelphia for Hilton Head, S. C., on January 16th, 1863 from which point it was ordered to Jacksonville, Fla. At the battle of Olustee, a point about fifty miles westward from that city, on February 20th the ”8th” met with disastrous losses.
After wintering in the trenches before Richmond the regiment participated in the final struggle around Petersburg, and was present at the scene of the surrender at Appomattox.
The regiment was mustered out on the 20th, and finally discharged at Philadelphia December 12th, 1865.

This 5th Tennessee Regiment was commanded by Colonel Calvin J. Venable, and was not the same regiment with which the 24th had been associated in Cleburne's Brigade which was commanded by Colonel Benjamin Hill, and was early called the 5th, although its official designation was the 35th Tennessee Infantry Regiment.
