 BEIRUT, LEBANON: 24TH MAU, MAY-DEC 1983
  When the 24th MAU arrived in Lebanon in May 1983, battle lines were drawn in the Bekaa Valley between the opposing forces of Israel and Syria.
            The Commander of the 24th MAU was Colonel Timothy Geraghty.
            The 24th MAU deployed to Beirut, Lebanon in May 1983, made-up of a typical MAGTF.

 HyperWar: US Marines in Lebanon, 1982-1984 [Chapter 2]
For the 34th MAU, the redesignation took place on 7 July 1982 at Camp Lejeune when it reverted from operational control of the Commander, Sixth Fleet to that of the Commander-in-Chief, Atlantic Fleet/Commander, Second Fleet (CinCLantFlt/2d Flt) and then to Fleet Marine Force, Atlantic (FMFLant), as noted in the 24th MAU SitRep No., dtd 12Jul82.
Because it was an element of the Sixth Fleet in July, the 32d MAU did not become the 22d MAU until 1 December, when it was in Camp Lejeune and once again under FMFLant control.

 Divisional Commanders of 7th Armoured Division
He was no stranger to the Division, having been the DAQMG when the Italians invaded Egypt in 1940, GS02 during the Brevity and Battleaxe operations, Commanding Officer of 3rd RTR, Commander of 22nd Armoured Brigade and had commanded the Division for four days (20th-24th January 1943) when Gen Harding was wounded.
Nevertheless, he went on to become C-in-C East Africa during the Mau Mau rebellion, Kenya, and, on retirement, Lt Governor and C-in-C Jersey.
Verney commented, in the history of the division (which he wrote postwar), that before the battles of Caumont he had been warned to look out for the transport of the 7th Armoured on the road, because its march discipline was "non-existent!" He also said that they "greatly deserved the criticism they received".

 Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron-263 [HMM-263]
HMM-263 deployed in May 1987 as the Air Combat Element of the 24th MAU for LF6F 3-87.
During Landing Force Sixth Fleet 2-95 deployment the squadron deployed aboard the USS Kearsarge (LHD-3) as the Aviation Combat Element for the 24th MEU(SOC).
During this deployment the squadron also participated in six large scale, multinational exercises, while providing TRAP support for Operations DENY FLIGHT and PROVIDE PROMISE in the Adriatic Sea, and in July 1996 the squadron was selected as the Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron of the Year for it’s efforts during LF6F 2-95.

 24th MEU History
During the 1960s and 1970s, what is today the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) was activated at various times as the 34th Marine Amphibious Unit (MAU) to participate in exercises and operations in the North Atlantic, Mediterranean and Caribbean.
In May 1982, it was redesignated the 24th MAU and served twice as part of the multinational peace-keeping force in Lebanon (October 1982 through February 1983, and May through November 1983).
From 1999 to 2001, the 24th MEU participated in numerous multinational military exercises and conducted peace support operations in Kosovo.

 United States Marine Corps - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On October 23, 1983, a Marine barracks in Lebanon was bombed, causing the highest peacetime losses to the Corps in its history (220 Marines of the 24th MAU were killed) and leading to the American withdrawal from Lebanon.
The Marine Corps has a widely held reputation as a fierce and effective fighting force and the Marines take pride in their gung-ho attitude, they are indoctrinated with a strong belief in their chain of command and the importance of esprit de corps, a spirit of enthusiasm and pride in themselves and the Corps.
Marines are regularly admonished from the time that they are recruits in boot camp that their conduct, even while on liberty, leave, or after they are discharged, can and will reflect upon the Corps.
