They are armed with the Martini Henry rifle first issued to British Infantry in 1874.On the 22nd of January 1879 an overwhelming force of Zulus destroyed 6 companies of the 24th Regiment and 600 other colonial troops at the Battle of Isandlwana.
The hospital contained 60 casualties, hospital staff and 81 troops from B Company II/24th (later the South Wales Borderers), commanded by Lieutenants Chard RE and Bromhead of the 24th.
This diorama depicts the events of the battle with Lieutenant Bromhead of the 24th in command, olour Sergeant Bourne and three Privates, all of B Company II/24th.

In March 1877, aged 20, he joined the 2nd Battalion 24th Regiment, that time based at Dover and shortly to move to Chatham.
The tiny garrison consisted of B Company 2nd 24th commanded by Lieutenant Gonville Bromhead, with some details of the 1st 24th and the Commissariat, and 100 men of the Natal Native Contingent who departed when the enemy appeared, leaving a total garrison of 140 of whom 36 were patients in the hospital.
There is in South Africa this very day a large party of all ranks of the Royal Regiment Of Wales who, together with a considerable representation of the Zulu nation led by Chief Buthelezi and King Zwelethini, are commemorating the brave men who fought on both sides at Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift.

The Grenadier Companies, including those of the 24th, put a wide flanking movement which resulted in a 4 hour struggle of fire and movement, while the battalion companies were heavily engaged in the centre and on other flanks.
The 24th losses were relatively light for the actions they were in, 1 officer, 7 soldiers killed and 124 wounded.

Over the winter Lord Germaine, the Secretary of State for the Northern Department, the minister with the direction of the American War, persuaded King George II to appoint General Burgoyne commander of the expedition planned to attack the American colonies by way of the Lake Champlain route during 1777.
The secrecy of the move was destroyed by a French officer, Colonel Roche de Fermoy, who set fire to his house on the summit of the hill lighting up the bay beneath, with its flotilla of boats carrying the American troops across the water.
There is no doubt that Burgoyne’s further march south overstrained the British supply system and contributed directly to his surrender at Saratoga.

At 11:00 on Sunday, 30th November 2003, a memorial plaque was unveiled at Warstone Lane Cemetery, Hockley, Birmingham, commemorating Private James Cooper VC, 2nd Bn, 24th Regiment (later the South Wales Borderers).
James Cooper died in 1889 and was buried, along with 34 other bodies, in Common Ground in Warstone Lane Cemetery, Hockley.
It is reported that seventeen officers and men were thus saved from what must otherwise have been a fearful risk, if not certainty, of death.

Rorke's Drift, a mission station near Isandhlwana converted into a temporary hospital, was garrisoned by 131 men, mainly from the 2nd/24th Foot, later the South Wales Borderers.
The regiment was awarded the unique honour of a wreath of immortelles to wear on its colour.
