Although Mathilde could have been reduced to a pile of rubble by a long history of collisions with other asteroids, it's also possible that its low density is primordial, Veverka says.

 Mathilde Flyby
A 25-minute flyby of asteroid 253 Mathilde, the largest asteroid ever visited by a spacecraft, is providing scientists with a spectacular look at a small planet more irregularly shaped than they imagined and heavily scarred with craters.
By the time of the June 27 flyby, ground-based telescopes had determined that Mathilde was one of the darkest objects in the solar system, reflecting only 3 or 4 percent of the light falling on it from the sun.
Mathilde's collision history may be a factor, but more research needs to be done to determine what role such collisions have played.

NEAR Fast Approaching Asteroid 253 Mathilde   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) spacecraft is closing in fast on the main-belt asteroid 253 Mathilde, as scientists prepare for the closest-ever study of an asteroid.
"Mathilde is a fl asteroid made of carbon-rich rock, believed by many to be the most primitive--least changed in the last 4.5 billion years--material left in the asteroid belt," says Dr. Joseph Veverka of Cornell University, who leads the mission's Science Team.
Since then ground-based telescopes have been used to determine, among other things, that Mathilde is a C-type asteroid and is one of the darkest objects in the solar system since it reflects only 4 percent of the light falling on it.

These color data indicate that Mathilde is compositionally homogeneous to first order, and that weathering processes do not produce color variations such as those seen on other asteroids observed by spacecraft (Gaspra and Ida; both S-type asteroids).
Mathilde is distinguished by five craters with diameters of order the object's mean radius.
The four major imaging science objectives were broad-band imaging at the highest possible resolution, to determine morphology; hemispheric coverage at 500 m/pixel, to determine size, shape, and volume; hemispheric multispectral coverage, to assess evidence for compositional heterogeneity and "space weathering" of the asteroidal regolith; and a search for satellites.

Mathilde Flyby   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Mathilde has attracted recent attention due to its extremely slow rotation period of 17.5 days.
Primary science objectives during this 10 km/sec flyby include high-resolution imaging, as well as albedo and spectral mapping of the illuminated surface of the large (50x50x70 km) asteroid.
Locating Mathilde with sufficient accuracy to insure the highest resolution observations are obtained near closest approach required optical navigation updates of Mathilde's position as late as 12 hours before encounter.

We have performed spectrophotometry of the NEAR flyby target 253 Mathilde using 5 filters from 1.25--3.35 microns.

We compare Mathilde to plausible meteorite analogs, and find that the surface of this asteroid is not consistent with a surface composition of common carbonaceous chondritic material.
