Her sister Jane, "small and fair with lovely blue eyes," (253) became Clover in the stories; her brother William was Phil; the youngest sisters Elizabeth and Theodora (frequently called Dora) became Elsie and Johanna, respectively; and an orphaned cousin, Theodorus, who lived with the family, was Dorry.
Her biographical entry in The Junior Book of Authors notes that she "sketched the outline" while "seated on a fallen tree in a grove" [6].
When the book (actually a collection of short stories) was published in 1871, it met with a favorable reception, earning praise from Jean Ingelow and Christina Rossetti, and so impressed a British publisher that he "ordered plates from Roberts Brothers at once" (Kilgour 108, 292).

Geoff Ryman : 253 : book reviews : spike magazine
You can't open 253 at any page, and so any passenger, because you'll soon be stranded with a particular character, unable to move on to another.
In cyberspace, 253 is already considered a classic example of the emerging genre known as "hypertext fiction", which is seen by some literary critics to be the logical extension of James Joyce and William Burroughs' non-linear experiments with writing.
In print, however, 253 can only be seen as a missed opportunity to demonstrate the impact of the Internet on the art of the novel.

Among the cast of Londoners, tourists, exiles, immigrants and other passengers is Margaret Thatcher (not that one); an ice-cream manufacturer self-styled "Bertie Jeeves"; a mass murderer's former co-worker and a near-victim of his; Henri Matisse's heir; somebody named Geoff Ryman on his day off; a band of actor-buskers called "Mind the Gap"; and a pigeon.
253 was originally a hypertext posted on the Web, but it makes the transition to print without losing fascinating structural appeal (readers will have to provide the links between the characters for themselves).
Geoff Ryman teaches us how to write in one of his humorous/ironic interludes - "we have treated words as things, moved them into place, and counted them - that's all there is to it!" In the processs, he also teaches us how to read fiction on the internet.

The second and central part of the book examines "the philosophical and scientific basis for intelligent design." The final part shows how "science and theology relate coherently and how intelligent design establishes the crucial link between the two." This suggests that Dembski is not simply rejecting Darwin and naturalism on fundamentalist or biblical grounds.
