15kVAC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In particular, the lower voltage reduced flashover problems in the motors, albeit at the cost of a non-standard line frequency requiring frequency conversion, and separate supplies.
This voltage has been superseded by 25kVAC at 50Hz or 60Hz since the 1950s.
Oddly, when Denmark decided to electrify in the 1970s they chose not to use 15kVAC which would have linked compatible systems in Germany and Sweden, but rather chose 25kVAC.

Transportation in Germany - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Since its privatization in 1994, Deutsche Bahn AG (DBAG) no longer publishes details of the tracks it owns; in addition to the DBAG system there are about 280 privately or locally owned railway companies which own an approximate 3,000 km to 4,000 km of the total tracks and use DB tracks in open access.

Heathrow Express is 25kVac whereas the whole area is third and fourth rail.
The South and West Transport Action Group has at T5I called for tunnels exceeding 7 m diameter (for maintenance staff to reach lineside apparatus when trains are running) and carry double-deck trains and freight to be built at Heathrow.

Tractionel Enterprise designs, supplies, erects and commissions 3kVDC, 25kVAC and 50kVAC railway electrification projects for Transnet, Metrorail and private siding owners, as well as underground and surface trolley lines of various voltages for mining companies.
We pride ourselves in being awarded the electrification of the Palmford-Majuba Rail Link for Eskom and the upgrading of the 3kVDC and 50kVAC railway overhead electrification system at Iscor's Sishen Iron Ore Mine, as these were the largest private projects of its kind since the mid eighties.
As Tractionel Enterprise holds a complete range of spares for railway electrification and trolley line projects, we are able to effect emergency repairs where accidental damage or theft has occurred to overhead contact line installations.

These were followed by seven EW class articulated locos from EE in 1952 for Wellington, and five EA class (later EO) locos from Toshiba of Japan replaced the English Electric EO locomotives at Otira in 1968.
Following the electrification of the NIMT between Palmerston North and Hamilton in the mid 1980s, twenty-two Class 30 25kVAC locomotives were built by Brush of the UK.
They are now generally known as the EF class and since the 1997 dieselisation of the Arthurs Pass - Otira section, are the only electric locos presently operating on Tranz Rail tracks.

To add a note of my own: I spent the better part of last weekend beating up my.025 uF 20KVAC Condenser Products cap from the first group purchase.
I was running hard with inputs up to 25KVAC RMS into my eight inch coil: wall to wall, floor to ceiling, white hot bolts everywhere.
After 5 minute runs with 6-8 kVA inputs I can report that I felt some moderate warming on the solid brass stud terminals; I feel the unit could easily handle much longer run times without worry of failure.

Therefore, the De Aar based 7E class 25kvac electrics will work up to the Beaconsfield South location and swap tonnage with the direct current electrics.
The layout of the AC/DC exchange yard required the addition of one road to the existing two roads.

The cost of adding the new tunnel cost £4.25Million more than the original electrification price and also resulted in the system being late for opening.
When the route did open for electric trains in 1954 it was 18 years after the original contracts had been signed and the system of electrification was becoming obviously outdated as new electrification programmes were planning to use 25kvac!!
However the lines passenger service times were reduced severally demonstrating how efficient the electric trains were in comparison to the steam hauled trains.

Apparently the E-60s would have a problem with the Deux-Montagnes line because of the curves at the beginning of the tunnel....something to do with the trucks of the E-60.
Maybe though if the trucks were rebuilt and the locomotive modified for 25kvAC you could have them pulling 1200-series cars (ex-GO with one end rebuilt with high doors for Central Station) on that route.
Not the first time one thought about "interchange" between the NEC and the Deux-Montagnes line.

PRR could see this and eventually adopted 11KV.
By the 1930's, GE had developed rectifier technology to the point where they sold DL&W on 3kv dc, which worked fine until worn out and then they moved to 25KVAC.
By 1970 or so the technology of 60Hz had advanced enough to make it practical at 11kv for the NY&LB electrification (which PRR had not completely wired) and 25KV for the ex DL&W. Modern equipment makes the voltage change over trivial if designed for it.

Locomotive or multiple unit train designed to operate over lines having two different electric traction power supply systems.  Locomotives have been designed to operate with up to four different voltages covering both AC and DC systems.  Some trains can operate on lines with either overhead or
third rail current collection, as in the case of Eurostar Trains and UK Class 92 Channel Tunnel locomotives and some North East Corridor trains in New York.  Eurostar trains can handle 750Vdc (England) 1500Vdc (Holland + France), 3000Vdc (Belgium) and 25kVac (Belgium and France).
