The 26th Cavalry Regiment, consisting mostly of Philippine Scouts, was the last US cavalry regiment to engage in horse-mounted warfare.
The 26th CAV was formed, in 1922, at Fort Stotsenburg, from elements of the 25th Field Artillery Regiment and the 43rd Infantry Regiment.
The regiment was based here, with the exception of Troop F (which was based at Nichols Field).

This regiment, Col. Burr Porter, was organized in the States of New York, Massachusetts and Vermont, under special authority from the War Department, for services on he northern frontiers for one year.
The New York battalion consisted of five companies, a, H, I, K and L, and under the rulings of the War Department, the field officers of the regiment were appointed by the Governor of this State.
These companies were mustered out and honorably discharged under Col. Ferris Jacobs, Jr.; L and I at Ogdensburg, July 1 and 3, 1865, respectively; H at Madison Barracks, Sackett's Harbor, July 7; K at Fort Porter, Buffalo, June 29; and G at Plattsburg, July 6, 1865; having lost by death of disease, three enlisted men.

General Bragg, advised by courier daily of the operations of the cavalry, lost no time in applying to the President for the promotion of Wheeler, and before the "horse marines" had ridden back within army lines, the appointment of their commander to the rank of Major General of Cavalry was received.
One or two other regiments in Wheeler’s Corps operated similarly; the bulk of his troopers were armed with Enfield, muzzle loading, carbines and with a variety of other arms captured from the enemy, and dependent for ammunition on the capture of a supply from the enemy.
Wheeler with his cavalry was left to cover the retreat, which was done in a most masterly manner and with severe punishment inflicted on the enemy in its many attacks.

In the case of non-operational regiments, as we understand it it's "home" is with it's lowest numbered Continental US (CONUS) unit (ie 1st Battalion, etc), or if it has none in CONUS, the lowest numbered unit elsewhere.
Also note that this includes all Armor and Cavalry regimental units, which in the case of many Cavalry regiments are actually infantry units.
However they are part of Cavalry regiments and as such will not appear on my Infantry Regiments page (whenever it is done).

Seeking information on my wife's uncle - Harold A. Wallace, Captain, 45th Infantry Regiment, Phillipine Scouts - Survived the Bataan Deat March and then was a POW @ Camp O'Donnel and Cabanatuan.
On the Fort Sam Houston webpage there is a photo of one of the 26th's armored scout cars.
