The division initially aided local self-defence units during the Massacres of Poles in Volhynia and fought against the Ukrainian Uprising Army.
The division was surrounded by the Germans near Kowel on April 2.
The remnants of the division withdrew westwards, crossed the Bug river on June 7 to the Parczew forest near Lublin.

On November 26, 1943 the Polish government in exile issued an instruction, which assumed that if the diplomatic relations with Soviet Union were not resumed before their entry to Poland, the Home Army forces were to remain underground until further decisions were made.
However, the Home Army commander took a different approach and on November 30, 1943 the final version of the plan was created.
In the Kielce and Radom area the 2nd Polish Home Army Division was formed and practically took control of all the area except for the cities themselves.

 History of the 12th Infantry Division
The 12th Infantry Division was formed in October 1934 in Schwerin in Mecklenburg, part of Wehrkreis II (military district two) which encompassed all of the state of Pomerania, and from which all recruits new recruits would be drawn.
The organic regimental units of the Division were formed by the expansion of the 5th (Prussian) Infantry Regiment and the 6th Infantry Regiment of the 2nd Infantry regiment of the Reichswehr.
That is to say, when the division was mobilised for war in 1939, the majority of its soldiers had gone through their two years national service and were recalled as reservists from their civilian occupation.

All those offers were refused as the division was a AK division subordinate to the Government in Exile.
Surrounded again at the end of May, part of it's strength managed to escape through the Prypec, escaping to the rear areas of the Red Army, where the commander of those that managed this effort was arrested, and the soldiers after being disarmed were forcibly conscripted to the Polish Communist Army under Gen. Berling.
