My Sources on Mlle. Maupin   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Curiously two famous professional singers, Marie-Louise Desmatins, born in 1670, and la Maupin (Mlle d'Aubigny), born at the same time, both died young people, at the ages of 38 and 37 years in 1708 and 1707.
In Gautier's novel, we may recall, Maupin is quite clear about the gender distinctions of exercise: "I was determined to have those successes as a cavalier which I could not aspire to as a woman.
Maupin's name is mentioned quite frequently by fin-de-siècle writers in connection with the growing popularity of women's sports.

The ‘good-natured Dorimeen’ is advised not to cry about lovers who leave her, because shepherds only flatter and never want to marry!
There is even an ‘unhappy Doris’, complaining about the cruel Clorinde: a girl that deprives her of her rest.
Although she does not specify why Clorinde is so important to her, the poem illustrates tensions between women.
