		In England, it is one of the four quarterly terms, or quarter-days, on which rents are paid, and in that and other divisions of the United Kingdom, as well as perhaps in other countries, it is the day on which burgal magistracies and councils are re-elected.
		After service the whole body went into the vestry, where the old mayor seated himself in an elbow-chair at a table covered with fl cloth, in the middle of which lay the mace covered with rosemary and sprigs of bay.

	When was Jesus Born?
		Generally a census would take place after the harvest season, around September or October, when it would not seriously affect the economy, the weather was good and the roads were still dry enough to allow easy travel.
		According to the normal dates for the census, this would probably be the season of Christ's birth.
		The birth years of 5 or 6 B.C. also fit with the best date for the crucifixion, that is A.D. Personally I opt for the 5 B.C. date, because I assume the wise men would want to come at once and the time for a journey from Babylon to Jerusalem takes only four months.

		The autumn equinox or ‘Mabon’ is one of the four principal sun festivals of the old Celtic religion (as well as other preChristian religions).
		Some sources believe that Michaelmas Day, the feast of St Michael the Archangel, was deliberately placed close to the date of the equinox to encourage the pagan Celts to convert.

		Usually if the conditions for migrants and seawatching are poor in September then you can at least see a good selection of waders but even these have been disappointing.
		I know Little Stint and Curlew Sand numbers vary hugely from year to year but this has been the worst year for them I can ever remember (and it's been a while since there's been good numbers of either).
		But it's been a terrible September as far as European vagrants is concerned with fewer than 10 individual warblers of three species in Iceland, and I haven't seen a single one of them yet!
