2B1Q coding is defined in ANSI T1.601 and ETR 080, Annex A. It can operate at distances up to about 18,000 feet (5.5 KM) with loss up to 42 dB.
By using 2B1Q coding, the data baud rate is 80 Kbaud.
The data block is applied to a scrambler function (as in most modern modems), and converted to 108 Quat (2B1Q) symbols.

Systems Considerations for the Use of
xDSL Technology for Data Access
The ISDN basic rate access 2B1Q digital subscriber line (DSL) was the first technology of this type to be deployed commercially at 160 kb/s full-duplex transmission on a single twisted pair.
The ISDN 2B1Q signal consists of voltage pulses of ± 875 V and ± 2.625 V. The symbol rate is 80,000 baud and the energy spectrum used by ISDN peaks at 40,000 Hz.
The 2B1Q line code is sometimes referred to as a baseband signal because it uses energy in frequencies down to zero, overlapping with the voice frequency band.

2B1Q encoding reduces by half the number of "voltage changes per second" (baud) needed to transmit a given number of bits per second (bit rate).
The beauty of 2B1Q is that it allows the great majority of existing local loops (up to 18/000 feet long, or 1400 ohm loop resistance) to carry more than twice as much traffic in digital form (BRI) as they carry in analog form.
As a local loop technology, the U interface with 2B1Q signal format of HDSL offers many advantages for "high speed" data (up to about 750 kbit/s full duplex on a single twisted pair)—even without a real ISDN switched network.

Telebyte - HDSL Modem - Bomara Associates
This is accomplished by using 2B1Q signaling technology.
Real life networks are not ideal but the 2B1Q line code reduces crosstalk and allows signals to be transmitted over much longer distances without repeaters or the removal of bridge taps.
Since no conditioning of transmission lines is necessary when HDSL is used the Model 681/681 represents a plug and play solution for using copper lines for high speed data transmission and Internet access.

2B1Q   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
(2B1Q) A physical layer encoding used for Integrated Services Digital Network basic rate interface.
2B1Q represents two bits (2B - a "dibit") using one of four signal levels (1Q - a "quadratude").
The first bit of the dibit is indicated by polarity: positive indicates a binary 1 and negative indicates a 0.

Communications News: NT1: key to basic-rate access; ISDN update - integrated services digital network
Systems designed to comply with the ANSI specification for 2B1Q can be expected to operate satisfactorily on 98% of all non-loaded subscriber loops in the North American two-wire loop plant.
The service performance objectives of the 2B1Q system were chosen to allow the local telephone company service provider to assign the ISDN loop facility from a normal POTS database.
In spite of the international convergence on 2B1Q as the accepted line code, differences in the NT1 design exist with respect to the country in which it will be used.

Telstra stalling ISDN install? No cards?! - ISDN, DoV
They are installing about 10 x 2B1Q cards per week (this seems weird all in all and I don't know if he meant across the country or across NSW).
They said that the 2B1Q cards were not installed in the RIM as yet but that this was supposed to happen by 31/8/05.
Another positive development which would suggest the RIM limitations have been bypassed (and the 2B1Q installed) is the fact that I can dial up to the net at 45.2 now instead of 31.2.

Bellcore also developed an alternate scheme whereby a 2 Binary 1 Quaternary (2B1Q) line coding scheme was employed.
2B1Q is the same signal encoding mechanism employed by Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) and encodes 2 bits/baud instead of the 1 bit/ baud supported by AMI.
This new technology was called "repeaterless T1" because it eliminated the necessity of regenerating T1 signals every 6000 feet (1830 meters) using repeaters, a process that made original T1 deployments complex and expensive.

2B1Q - Short for 2 Binary, 1 Quartinary.
2B1Q is a full-duplex digital signaling technique used by many digital communications technologies (like ISDN) to send data over a single pair of wires.
It uses a system of three different voltages: one for each of the two binary states (the 2B part of “2B1Q”) and a third, quartinary voltage that indicates both ends of the data connection are sending the same binary value.

When using 2B1Q the SNE2000Q-S will take slightly longer to connect than when using CAP line encoding.
