2D computer graphics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
2D graphics models may combine geometric models (also called vector graphics), digital images (also called raster graphics), text to be typeset (defined by content, font style and size, color, position, and orientation), mathematical functions and equations, and more.
In object oriented graphics, the image is described indirectly by an object endowed with a self-rendering method—a procedure which assigns colors to the image pixels by an arbitrary algorithm.
These editors generally output graphics files where the layers and primitives are separately preserved in their original form.

Vector graphics editor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A vector graphics editor is a computer program that allows users to compose and edit vector graphics images interactively on the computer screen (compare with MetaPost) and save them in one of many popular vector graphics formats such as EPS, PDF, WMF or SVG.
Vector editors are often contrasted with bitmap editors, and their capabilities complement each other.
Finally, 3D computer graphics software such as Maya or Blender can also be thought of as an extension of the traditional 2D vector editors, and they share some common concepts and tools.

Graphics shapes and user interface widgets can be connected together with first-class connection objects into any number of directed or undirected (network) graphs.
The sizes and locations of graphics shapes and user interface independent widgets are specified in device-resolution-independent floating point coordinates and so have the same appearance and relative size regardless of the size or dots-per-inch of the particular screen or printer used for display.
Graphics shapes and user interface widgets share the same coordinate space, the same API and are of the same basic type.

Moreover, Quartz 2D is a single part in a larger graphics architecture on Mac OS X. This architecture was designed from its inception to take advantage of advances in the graphics hardware of modern personal computers.
At the time of its introduction, the system’s ability to repurpose graphics on a broad number of printers with very different capabilities was a clarion call for the graphics industry.
Instead of erasing graphics, in Quartz 2D you create a mask, or clipping area, and draw the graphics you want the user to see relying on the mask to remove parts of the image you don’t want to display.
