2UE mainstay Laws still beat 2GB in the mornings but the gap has narrowed dramatically, with Laws on 11.9 per cent (down 1.2 per cent) and 2GB's Ray Hadley on 9.1 per cent (up 3.5 per cent).

After 2UE lost Alan Jones and Ray Hadley to John Singleton's 2GB two years ago, the radio station underwent an almost overnight slide in audiences and advertising revenues.
At its peak in 2000, 2UE was writing revenues of about $35 million and dominating talk-back radio by a country mile, vying only with Austereo's 2Day FM for the overall number 1 radio position in Sydney.
Today, advertising revenues are off by an estimated 40 per cent to $20 million and 2UE is ranked five in the overall station rankings.

Talkback host John Laws yesterday told the ''cash for comment'' inquiry that although 2UE had raised concerns in writing about allegations made on Media Watch, he was not told to change the format of his high-rating program.
But Laws repeatedly told the ABA he had not been directed by anyone at 2UE to alter his show's format, either after the first Media Watch program in March 1998, or the second program in July 1999.
Laws had already told the inquiry that the 2UE chairman, Mr John Conde, had told him that a July 27, 1998, memo issued in the wake of the first Media Watch allegations, which banned the presentation of promotional material as news and embellishing, "did not necessarily apply to him".

For all the controversy it has created, the partial merger between Southern Cross Broadcasting's Sydney radio station 2UE with its main rival has won the approval of analysts because they believe the deal will cut the company's costs.
