Richard Boyle, 1st Earl of Burlington and 2nd Earl of Cork (1612 - 1698) was the second son and sixth child of Richard Boyle, 1st Earl of Cork and his second wife, formerly Catherine Fenton.
He succeeded as 2nd Earl of Cork on the death of his father on 15 September 1643.
King Charles I created Lord Cork Baron Clifford of Lanesborough, in the County of York, on 4 November 1644, and he was appointed Lord High Treasurer of Ireland on 16 November 1660.

The first Earl's rise to fame and fortune was the result of his success in colonising his great estates and the establishment of schools, roads, and bridges to facilitate the proper development of industry and agriculture.
Some restoration work was carried out by the 2nd Earl of Cork (1612 - 1694) and from then until 1820 its owners did very little to the castle.

He was grandson of Sir William Parsons, 2nd Baronet, by Katherine, eldest daughter of Arthur, 2nd Viscount Ranelagh, by Katherine, the attached sister of Robert Boyle the Philosopher, and one of the eight daughters of the Great Earl of Cork.
We give these details as evidence of the close ties that existed between the families, and, while we cannot produce evidence for it, it is quite possible that our first G.M. was not by any means the first of his kindred to be made a Freemason in Ireland.
