  U.S. 2nd Marine Division - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The U.S. 2nd Marine Division is a division of the United States Marine Corps, which forms the ground-force component of the II Marine Expeditionary Force.
The 2d and 8th Marines (reinforced by other units of the 2d Marine Division) were awarded the Presidential Unit Citation (US) while attached to the 1st Marine Division from 7 August and 4 November 1942, respectively, for the Guadalcanal operation.
The 2d Marine Division was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for Tarawa Atoll, Gilbert Islands, 20–24 November 1943.

 2d Marine Division
The 2d Marine Division is the ground combat element of II MEF.
In World War II, elements of the division served in Iceland, in Hawaii during the attack on Pearl Harbor, and on Samoa, then the full division in the Guadalcanal campaign, followed by the bloody assault of Tarawa for which it was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation, and on to Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa.
In the liberation of Kuwait, the 2d Marine Division attacked approximately 25 kilometers to the northwest of the 1st Marine Division.

 1st Marine Division - 2nd Battalion 4th Marines
The long and illustrious history of the Second Battalion, Fourth Marines began in April of 1914 during WWI when it was activated as one of the three battalions of the Fourth Marine Regiment.
The battalion arrived in Japan as part of the Fourth Marines on 24 August 1953 and was assigned the mission of defending southern Japan.
On 25 July 1994, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, then part of the 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, was redesignated 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines.

2nd Marine Division and their ISF counterparts continue to conduct counter-insurgency operations throughout Western Al Anbar to provide a safe and secure environment for the Iraqi people to participate in their new democratic government.

Grant was assigned to Marine Forces Reserve's 4th Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th Marine Division, Albuquerque, N.M. A total of nine Marines were killed in that operation, which, according to DoD, was designed to eliminate terrorists and foreign fighters in the area.
Marine commanders estimated they killed more than 100 insurgents and foreign fighters during the operation, which is aimed at allies of Jordanian-born militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

Comments: My Grandpa, Alvin Smith, joined the Mariens around 1952 and was sent to Korea, and after he dided in 2001, I came across photos which he had from before, during and after the war of him and some of his buddies.
