Baruch is found among the prophetical books which include Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, (Baruch), Ezekiel, Daniel, and the twelve minor prophets.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Baruch
The fact that the sixth chapter of Baruch bears the title, "The Epistle of Jeremiah", has been, and is still in the eyes of many, a decisive reason for holding the time-honoured view that the great prophet is its author.
Baruch 1:14 says that the book was meant to be read publicly in the Temple; hence it must have been composed in Hebrew for that purpose.
That the Book of Baruch is "a sacred and canonical" writing has been defined by the Council of Trent; that it has just as much right to be held "inspired of God" as any other book of Holy Writ can readily be shown by a close study of the Canon of the Bible.

3 Baruch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
This study on 3 Baruch will attempt to identify an original text, working back from the 15th and 16th century manuscripts which we have available today.
Some detailed study of the ending of 3 Baruch will be necessary, as the majority of scholars believe the work to be lacking some original ending which would put it more in line with other Judaeo-Christian works of around the same time.
Some argue that this is due to some of the original ending having been lost since the original writing; but others argue that the ending is perfectly coherent, in that 3 Baruch is intended as a form of protest against the recognised apocalyptic cosmology of the Second Temple Period.

Baruch 1.11 for example says that Belshazzar was Nebuchadnezzar’s son as does Daniel 5.2, etc. There is an historical problem here (Belshazzar was not N’s son but Nabonidus) and the relation between Daniel and Baruch is disputed at this point.

The book of Baruch was probably written sometime between 200 and 60 BCE; it is set, however, during the Babylonian exile of the early sixth century BCE and attributed to Jeremiah's friend and secretary, Baruch son of Neriah (Jer 32.12; 36.4; 43.3; 45.1).
Judgment as to whether Baruch is the product of a single author or of an editor who compiled already existing materials is complicated by the heavy dependence of the confession and the poems on various scriptural models, since the dependence may account for much of the variation in style and theological perspective.

THE APOCALYPSE known as 3 Baruch (= Greek Apocalypse of Baruch) depicts a celestial tour during which an angelic guide leads a visionary through five heavens revealing to him the wonders of the upper realm.
Even a brief look at the apocalypse shows that despite a conspicuous coloring of the Adamic interpretation of the origin of evil, the details of 3 Baruch's descriptions of the garden expose the motifs and themes linked to another prominent story in which the source of evil is traced to the myth of the Watchers/Giants.
Third Baruch became known first in its Slavonic version,5 and only later were the Greek manuscripts of the book uncovered.6 Despite the availability of the Greek evidence, scholars noted that in some parts of the pseudepigraphon the Slavonic text seems to preserve more original material.

 USCCB - NAB - Baruch - Introduction
An observance of the feast of Booths with a public prayer of penitence and petition (Baruch 1:15-3:8), such as is supposed by the introduction (Baruch 1:1-14), would not have been possible during the lifetime of Baruch after the fall of Jerusalem; this indeed is suggested in the prayer itself (Baruch 2:26).
The lesson thus gained is followed by a hymn in praise of Wisdom (Baruch 3:9-4:4), exalting the law of Moses as the unique gift of God to Israel, the observance of which is the way to life and peace.
The ideal city of Jerusalem is then represented (Baruch 4:5-29) as the solicitous mother of all exiles, who is assured in the name of God that all her children will be restored to her (Baruch 4:30-5:9).
