The shift from singular through John 3:10 to plural in John 3:11 may reflect the early church's controversy with the Jews.

It was written for the purpose of commending to Gaius a party of Christians led by Demetrius, who were strangers in the place where he lived, and who had gone thither for the purpose of preaching the gospel (verse 7).
The language of this epistle is remarkably similar to 2 John, and it is the scholarly consensus that the same man wrote both of these letters, although it has been doubted he also wrote the Gospel of John, 1 John, or Revelation.

(Luke 3:1-20)
John the Baptist is not introduced to the reader of Luke’s gospel at the time his public ministry commenced, as is the case in all the other gospels.
John’s ministry should thus have demonstrated, once and for all, that the blessing of Israel, in fulfillment of the Abrahamic Covenant, would never be achieved through the Mosaic Covenant, through the law-keeping of the nation Israel.
John was a man who knew who he was (self-image?) and was thus committed to enhancing the ministry and person of Messiah, while at the same time diminishing his own role.

Does John 3:5 teach that baptism is necessary for salvation?
Throughout the Old Testament (Psalm 51:2; Psalm 51:7; Ezekiel 36:25) and the New Testament (John 13:10; John 15:3; 1 Corinthians 6:11; Hebrews 10:22), water is often used figuratively of spiritual cleansing or regeneration that is brought forth by the Holy Spirit, through the Word of God, at the moment of salvation (Ephesians 5:26; Titus 3:5).
Jesus reinforces this truth in John 3:7 when He restates the fact that one must be born again, and that this newness of life can only be produced by the Holy Spirit (John 3:8).
Jesus rebukes Nicodemus in John 3:10 by asking him: “Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not understand these things?” This implies that what Jesus had just told him was something Nicodemus should have known and understood from the Old Testament.

In his heyday no one was outselling his albums or out-booking John for concert appearances, and considering the incredible talents on the scene at the time, that is a pretty good indication of just how popular he was, and just how universal John Denver's appeal was.
John, more than any of his contemporaries, actively caught the public's imagination regarding the wonders of the natural environment, and in a time when environmental concerns were splashed all over the headlines and the evening news, John's vision of popular concern for and stewardship of the natural world was immensely important.

 1way2God.net - 3 John
There is nothing within 2 or 3 John that points unambiguously towards a specific author.
Arguments that 2 and 3 John came from a different author than that of 1 John become evidently problematic when considering content and vocabulary, as several distinct thematic links exist between the first epistle and the last two.
1 John is unanimously agreed by the early Church to have been written by John son of Zebedee (the Apostle), and it seems that the obvious similarities in content of 2 & 3 John with 1 John point towards his authorship of these as well.
