3000 hit club - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Major League Baseball, the 3000 hit club is an informal term applied to the group of players who have made 3000 or more career base hits.
The club's "founding member" was Cap Anson in 1897, even before what is known as the modern era of baseball, making the 3000 hit club one of the oldest markers of greatness in the sport.
Getting 3000 hits is generally considered - barring severe bad behavior off the field - one of the most reliable marks of a player entering the Baseball Hall of Fame.

 Movie Review: Mr. 3000
Bernie Mac stars as Stan Ross, a member of baseball's elite 3000 hit club, who spent his career with the Milwaukee Brewers attacking the fans and his retirement attacking the press.
When it's discovered that three of his hits don't count and his automatic qualification for the Hall of Fame is gone, Stan returns to the team he despises to earn his three hits.
3000 is not a complete wash. Stan is made to go through training and his teammates—all young enough to be his sons—are not happy with his return to the team, requiring him to earn their respect.

 A Milestone Week
The 3000 hit club, on the other hand, looks like it's going to stay fairly exclusive in the long term.
The arrival of Boggs and Gwynn at 3000 and the approach of Cal Ripken to that number does not signal an era in which 3000 hits will be easily reachable.
Gwynn reached 3000 hits by hitting at least 150 hits every year from 1984 thru 1997, leading the league in hits 7 times during that period.

Hit (baseball) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In baseball statistics, a hit (denoted by H), sometimes called a base hit, is credited to a batter when the batter safely reaches first base after hitting the ball into fair territory, without the benefit of an error or a fielder's choice.
The hit is scored the moment the batter reaches first base safely - if the runner is put out while attempting a double or triple on the same play, he still gets credit for the hit.
A hit for one base is called a single - the number of singles is equal to the total number of hits minus the number of extra base hits.

3,000 Hits Club by Baseball Almanac
The 3,000 Hits Club is more of a personal plateau than an actual award given to any player.
The rules were restored to their original format in 2001 and Anson is once again a member of the club he started.
Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Eddie Murray and Rafael Palmeiro are the only four (4) members of the 3,000 Hits Club who are also members of the 500 Home Runs Club.

The hit was an RBI double which came on a 2-2 pitch in the fifth inning off Seattle's starter Joel Pineiro.
Palmeiro, 40, is the first player since Rickey Henderson in 2001 to collect 3,000 and becoming the 26th player to accomplish that career-defining feat which should land him in the Baseball Hall of Fame once he retires.
Palmeiro entered this season with 2,928 hits, and he made a push toward 3,000 in the past month, when he emerged as a force in the Orioles' offense.

But what hit me later is that this illuminates a broader problem in sports: the obsession fans and experts have with records and milestones.
Baseball has its 3000-hit club and the 500-home run club as marks of a truly great player; a player with 2,980 hits and 490 home runs is pretty darn good.
Babe Ruth hit those home runs 75 years ago, back when he was the first player to hit 40, 50, or 60 home runs in a single season.
