The 317th Airlift Squadron traces its origins to the 317th Troop Carrier Squadron (Commando), which was constituted on 1 May 1944, activated on 1 May 1944 at Camp Mackerel, NC, and immediately assigned to the 2d Air Commando Group.
The squadron was reactivated on 1 April 1992 at Charleston AFB, in the Air Force Reserve as the 317th Airlift Squadron (Associate) and assigned to the 315th Military Airlift Wing (Associate).
The mission of the 317th Airlift Squadron is to recruit, train, and qualify combat ready aircrews to meet global tasking.
