Bio: 31Knots fuses complex rhythms with jagged guitars for mathematical songs that zig-zag through changes and anxious start-stop riffs, calling to mind Sonic Youth, Modest Mouse, the Ex, and even Fugazi's more challenging work.
Guitarist Joe Haege and bassist Jay Winebrenner have been played under the 31Knots moniker for years, but it was when they added drummer Joe Kelly in autumn of 1998 that the Portland, OR, band fully came together.
From that point, 31Knots began to gain momentum in the indie rock scene by playing shows with bands such as Modest Mouse, Califone, and the Owls.

 Kevchino : Band Info
Formed in 1997 by guitarist and vocalist Joe Haege, bassist Jay Winebrenner, and a drummer who was soon replaced by Joe Kelly, 31Knots moved to Portland where they began playing shows as well as writing and recording their self-released debut Climax/Anticlimax which was released in 2000.
When 31Knots entered the studio to begin tracking their third album in August 2002, Joe Kelly abruptly, yet amicably, left the band after only recording four songs.
31Knots sent a copy to Polyvinyl and within weeks the two agreed to not only release the EP stateside but also to begin working together on a full-length.

This was quite a risk: Working, writing, honing and practicing their songs as a trio served 31knots well, and the potential for a narrow-minded songwriting focus or a deeper schism to develop once Haege brought songs to Pellicci and Winebrenner was a potentiality.
Winebrenner is and has always been essential to the way Haege writes songs in 31knots; Haege subconsciously knows Winebrenner’s sensibilities and the bassist’s ability to picture the aesthetic of the song before going to record it is of great value to the band.
Being esoteric about art is pure snobbery to 31knots, and the trio is confident this record is the soundtrack to the sentiment it has captured.

DOA - 31Knots - It Was High Time to Escape
There are so many bands and there is so much music that, as cliché as it may sound, it's easy for a music fan to think they've heard it all.
So the only approach at originality these days is to blend genres, resulting in electronic rock, orchestrated rock, jazz-rock, and other quasi-styles that succeed and fail on the talent and guts of the musicians involved.
31knots' last album, A Word is Also a Picture of a Word, won me over on the basis of one amazing song.

The Portland, Ore., based 31knots is stopping by the Quad-Cities on its current U.S. and European tour in support of a brand new album, "It Was High Time to Escape" (54-40 or Fight Records).
Known for its combination of progressively challenging math-rock and Fugazi style post-punk, 31knots has been heralded by many as one of the best underground rock bands currently in existence.
Some critics insist it's the ethos behind the music of 31knots that tends to set the group ahead of its competition.

PORTLAND, OR's 31KNOTS consists of core members Joe Haege, Jay Winebrenner, and Jay Pellicci--three young men making a collective of sounds that bands twice their size can't even scope or focus on.
It was a good choice for us because it had a ProTools setup, which allowed us to easily integrate all the pre-recorded stuff I had done on my own, as well as being able to pull off a little computer trickery.
A couple of names that have become synonymous with 31Knots in press are Fugazi (instrumentation) and Modest Mouse (vocals).

The title of 31Knots' debut full-length, A Word Is Also a Picture of a Word, was taken from Don DeLillo's novel -Libra.
Like DeLillo's fictional speculation of the events leading Lee Harvey Oswald to President Kennedy's assassination, 31Knots' album is undeniably sinister, evoking conspiracy and "men in small rooms" with a calculating precision and complexly constructed matrix that would do the novel proud.
31Knots desperately dodges simple labels as A Word Is Also a Picture of a Word grinds from a Jawbox intensity to experimental start/stop guitar parts ("E for Alpha"), from Fugazi politics and riffs interchanged with dreamy melodies ("Buy High Sell Low") to math rock ("Pity Has No Power").

The band is a trio consisting of Joe Haege on guitar, piano and vocals, Jay Pellicci on drums and vocals and Jay Winebrenner on bass.
The vocals sound a bit like Jon Anderson, though they have a raw edge that is much more fit for the alt-pop stylings that dominate the song aspects of the music.
A similar track and one of my favorites is "That Which Has No Name!", a song which never stays still for very long, continually evolving through multiple movements, all within a few short minutes, and without feeling like the band are cramming too many ideas into too small a space.

By continuing to stick with rudimentary arrangements 31Knots will fail to evolve into the band they so desperately want to be.

The one complain I have about Talk Like Blood, however, is that in their pursuit of a new identity, 31Knots have forsaken much of their former immediacy.

So, let me start off by saying that I worked right next door to guitarist/vocalist Joe Haege when he was tending bar and I was working at a liquor store.  I've been accused of being biased towards
this band because I had met Joe and thought he was such a pleasant cat to be around...so how could I dislike his music?  All right, I can take the criticism.  I did want to like 31Knots.  But their music made it easy to do just that.
You may not love 31Knots the moment you listen to them, they might be a bit too jarring for that.  But, indeed, they may become one of those bands that you love to have around because no one else has the balls to do what they're doing so damn well.

For many years now, Portland, Oregon has been lucky to have indie prog-popsters 31Knots residing within its boundaries.
Ultimately, though this EP is a perfect mix of the heavy and fragile elements of 31Knots, the eleven-track Talk Like Blood full-length (recorded in early 2005) truly puts the band through their paces.
In fact, fans might feel a bit apprehensive after hearing opening track “City of Dust”—very experimental pop with half spoken-word vocals, half Haege’s double-tracked harmonies—but those fears are dashed away with the onset of “Hearsay” and its Police-styled reggae tendencies.

Portland's 31Knots offer an uplifting delirium of sorts.
They're that fearless kind of crazy that forces a band to try anything once, often resulting in gleefully skewed takes on traditional rock genres.
Throughout Talk Like Blood, haunting cellos, tinkering pianos, and understated female harmonies also throw some kindling on 31Knots' fire, which ultimately (and very successfully) laces together the raw attitude of post-hardcore with indie rock's more interesting and artistic side.

Review: "31Knots: It Was High Time To Escape" - Sea of Tranquility - The Web Destination for Progressive Music!
Portland’s 31Knots was hailed by Magnet magazine as “the flagship band when the term ‘prog pop’ enters our lexicon” after the 2002 release of the group's full-length debut, A Word Is Also A Picture of A Word.
Granted, tracks like “The Gospel According to Efficiency” and “That Which Has No Name” find the band rearing its heavier chops, with singer and guitarist Joe Haege actually adding some bite to his nervous vocals.
Indeed, the press materials for It Was High Time To Escape states that “being esoteric about art is pure snobbery to 31Knots.” Yet that attitude is precisely what makes this trio come off as pretentious, ultimately spoiling what essentially is provocative music created by thee discerning and talented players.
