The 31st Infantry Division arrived in Oro Bay, New Guinea, 24 April 1944, and engaged in amphibious training prior to entering combat.
Meanwhile, the remainder of the Division relieved the 6th Infantry Division in the Sarmi-Wakde Island area, 18 July 1944, built bridges, roads, and docks, patrolled the area, and engaged small units of the enemy, trying not to provoke a large scale counterattack by the enemy.
In mid-August the Division began to stage for the Morotai operation, leaving Aitape and Maffin Bay, 11 September 1944.

Initially intended as part of an Indian armoured division, this former cavalry brigade was sent to the Western Desert in the spring of 1941, where it was overrun and destroyed by German tanks.
The division trained extensively but with very few tanks — the four tank battalions assigned to 1st Indian Armoured Brigade had three M3 Stuart tanks each, though a number of the obsolete India Pattern light tanks were used for crew training.
Division headquarters moved to Iraq in June 1942, where it took command of the shattered remnants of 3rd Indian Motor Brigade and the 252nd Indian Armoured Brigade, which still had no tanks.

Following the division's introduction to combat, the Christmas present for its troops was a South Pacific cruise to Morotai, a small island in the Moluccas group nearly 300 miles northwest of Sansapor, New Guinea.
While the troops of the "Golden Cross" (33rd Division) were en route to take over from the "Dixie Division" (31st), the Japanese put an infantry colonel ashore on Morotai to organize their remaining forces there.

The assault force, named Tradewind Task Force, was mostly comprised of the 31st 'Dixie' Infantry Division plus the 126th Regimental Combat Team of the 32nd Division.

In December 1944/January 1945 the remnants of the Division are withdrawn from Hungary and set to Lower Steiermark in Austria for rest and refitting and then sent to Silesia in February 1945 where the Division is augmented by an S.S. Police Battalion (Germans from the South Tyrol) and an Hungarian Waffen S.S. Battalion.
The Division studied is one that has had little information available until now and the work is based primarily on personal involvement of the survivors and German Military Records.

The 31st Regimental Combat Team, better known as Task Force MacLean (later known as Task Force Faith), comprised of elements of the 7th Infantry Division, was virtually annihilated east of the Chosin Reservoir.
The attack would be spearheaded by the 1st Marine Division, under the command of MG O.P. Smith, which would advance up the west side of the Chosin Reservoir, with the 7th Infantry Division (led by Task Force MacLean) along the east side of Chosin and the 3rd Infantry Division guarding the Marines’ flanks.
Three CCF divisions (59th, 79th, and 89th) were to hit the Marines at Yudam-ni and Hagaru-ri, along with the 7th Infantry, 3rd Infantry Division, and farther south.
