The 347th Wing was officially re-designated as the 347th Rescue Wing on May 8, 2001.
The wing's mission--fulfilled with the RB-57 "Canberra," the F-4C "Phantom," the C-130 "Hercules," and the EB-57 "Canberra"--was to provide air defense for Japan and the Republic of South Korea, to fly aerial reconnaissance, and to maintain a high state of readiness due to the hostilities taking place in Southeast Asia.
The arrival of the wing's new commander Brigadier General James I. Mathers on 31 August 1992, coincided with the most significant change for the wing since its arrival at Moody in 1975.

A spokesperson at McGuire said the wings’ main mission is to “quickly open forward contingency air bases and extend AMC’s en route infrastructure.” That means a small team of specialist performs all airport operations, including command and control, marshaling, loading and unloading, and launching transport aircraft.

The 347th RQW, Detachment 1, is a unit of the 347th Rescue Wing located at Moody AFB, GA.

The 374th Tactical Airlift Wing (TAW) had been formed at Clark AB, Phillipines, in November 1973 as the primary USAF airlift unit in the Far East, with one squadron of its C-130s located at Yokota from late 1974.
The 374th was redesignated as an Airlift Wing (AW) on 01 April 1992, transferred from USAF's Air Mobility Command (AMC) to the Pacific Air Forces (PACAF), and relocated from Clark AB to Yokota AB.
