135 film - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The film itself has the same dimensions (35 mm wide) and perforations (16 per 72 mm) as 35 mm movie film but is enclosed in a light-tight cassette to allow cameras to be loaded in daylight.
The 35 mm film standard for motion picture film was established in Thomas Edison's lab by William Kennedy Laurie Dickson.
The 70 mm film was cut lengthwise into two equally thick strips, hence the 35 mm thickness, spliced together end to end, and then perforated along both edges.

35 mm film - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
35 mm film is the basic film gauge most commonly used for both still photography and motion pictures, and remains relatively unchanged since its introduction in 1892 by William Dickson and Thomas Edison, using film stock supplied by George Eastman.
By law, both 16 mm and 8 mm gauge stock (as well as 35 mm films intended for non-theatrical use) had to be manufactured on safety stock.
Because of 3-perf's incompatiblity with standard 4-perf equipment, there generally is no cause for it not be used with the Super 35 mm film camera specification, which utilizes the whole negative area between the perforations, including what would be the soundtrack area in a standard print.

 17-35 mm f/2.8 AFS Nikkor
This results because the D1, as all other current digital cameras, has a recording surface smaller than the 35 mm film format so lenses mounted on it give a smaller angle of view and thus act as if their focal length is longer.
Also remarkable is that maximum aperture sharpness was slightly better at 17mm than at the 35 mm setting, which is the reverse situation of the previous 20-35 mm Nikkor.
When the lens is set at 35 mm, the remarkable image quality of the 17-35 holds up much longer than usual when the lens is stopped down.

Macrophotography with a Nikon Coolpix 990/995: Using 35 mm Camera
In addition, many of the 35 mm SLR macro gear could be easily adapted/modified to work with the Coolpix 990, and yielding even higher magnification images, more than 15x (subject size magnification).
A close-up lens attachment (28 mm filter size) may be used to further increase the magnification.
This flexibility is especially useful during 35 mm slide copying, macro imaging of pathology microscope slides and small object/mineral photography.

This information will help you to use a 35 mm single-lens-reflex (SLR) camera to record the wonder and beauty of the miniature world and to discover and explore small objects.
The advantage is that the larger film size (120 or 4 x 5-inch film) requires less magnification than 35 mm film to make an enlargement of equal size.
The immediate ancestor of the 35 mm SLR is the rangefinder camera.

The slot into which the 35 mm photo slide is inserted is a generous height so I made a simple modification to an empty plastic 35mm slide mount; the top half of the mount was removed and replaced with two cardboard pieces to guide and loosely hold the microscope slide in place.

The zoomlens set at 20 mm gave similar results (except for the distortion) to the 20 mm lens.
At that time I did not take a close look to the pictures taken at 24 mm, 28mm and 35 mm thinking that the quality would certainly increase when zooming in.
P.S.: Once you have the 85 mm f1.8 lens, you start to be very picky with the quality of your other lenses.

Advanced Photo System (APS) versus 35 mm Film Format
APS negatives measure 16.7 mm x 30.2 mm compared to 24 mm by 36 mm for 35-mm (135) film.
Since the negative is smaller (less than 60% of a 35-mm negative) it must be magnified more in order to produce enlargements.
A lens with a focal length of about 35 to 40-mm is more or less a standard lens when used with an APS camera.

16-35 MM - Chromatic Aberration - FM Forums   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
I'm not sure if it's my copy of the Lens but I tried it on a friends EOS 1V film camera just to get an idea of what this Lens would be like on the 1DS -- I noticed some definite chromatic aberration at the 16 - 20 MM range and also at largish apertures.
I'm wondering if the 16-35 was designed for cameras such as 1D, D60 and D30 and hence never intended to be used at these extreme wide angles on a normal (I.e Full Frame) camera.
I think the 24-70 will be perfect for the 1DS and probably for extreme cases a 20 MM prime will do it for me if and when I can get a 1DS or equivalenf full frame camera.
