Sony F707 > 35mm Equivalent   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Most camera references to a "35mm equivalent focal length" are normally made in reference to the diagonal of the image plane.
Thinking 38 mm " the 35mm equivalent focal length" of 9.7 mm as referenced in the camera documentation is the same for the Horizontal and Vertical.
It is not, in effect- the 35mm equivalent diagonal width focal length was actually used in trying to calculate the horizontal width field of view.

And all of that 35mm gear is only worth about $275, so I am not really hurting my pocketbook much by keeping it.
Bottom line is that if you are not really using your 35mm gear much these days, it is probably better to sell most of it off now, while you can still get a better return on them.
As an alternative to reverting to 35mm I've elected to use a MF rangefinder for these needs- and of course that gives me access to large rectangles and panoramics too, at a cost.

ACE Index FAQ, APS Cameras versus 35mm Compacts & SLRs
Countless 35mm cameras are being used today, including compact point and shoot styles, rangefinders and single lens reflex (SLR) models.
Most 35mm compacts and modern SLRs are able to read the DX coding on the film canister and set the film speed automatically.
Although we did not include 35mm rangefinder cameras in this chart because of their declining numbers, photographers need to be aware of this option, one classic example of a 35mm rangefinder is Leica's M System cameras and lenses.

At the 35mm end, the barrel distortion is reduced to levels most won't notice (still there, though).

The small negative offers less lattitude than 35mm and therefore any changes in the grain characteristics of the film due to over and under exposure on a scene by scene basis are more easily noticed in the final print.
As the generations of 35mm interpositive and internegative take away a little bit of image sharpness, it is important to start with a crisp negative.
Then a 35mm scope internegative was made from the 35mm flat interpositive using a special lens that converts the 2.35:1 portion in the frame of the interpositive to an anamorphic image on the internegative.

"MINI" CAMERAS -- SMALL FULL-FRAME 35mm AND APS CAMERAS
For example, there are many 35mm cameras that have a full image frame (24x36mm) but are so tiny that they almost qualify as subminiature -- at least in intention.
Some people are under the impression that all APS cameras are smaller than 35mm mini-cameras, or that the smallest APS cameras are smaller than the smallest 35mm cameras.
Many 35mm, and APS cameras are big because of all the features that they include, such as motorized film advance, electronic flash, auto-focus lens, etc. If these features were to be removed the camera could become very small, but there are very few that meet these criteria.

17-35mm AF-S Lens Review by Thom Hogan
On a digital body with 1.5x magnification, this lens becomes the equivalent to a 25.5 to 52.5mm lens (one of my old favorites in the 35mm world was the 24-50mm, though it had terrible barrel distortion, so the 17-35mm feels like a big step towards the better on my D1x and D100).
Light falloff is reasonably well under control throughout the range, with visible corner falloff on 35mm cameras, though not objectionable; with digital bodies, the falloff is nearly invisible, though it's still there wide open.
At 35mm, the distortion is virtually gone and straight lines at the edge of the frame look straight.
