36 Crazyfists is evidence that there's a beauty in isolation, a newfound purpose from even the worst of tragedies, and that heavy metal and hard rock music doesn't have to be all doom and gloom to have power.
Like the Jackie Chan flick from which they take their name, 36 Crazyfists brings an action-packed attack with a smile, injecting an infectious enthusiasm into their unique blend of crushing rhythms and soaring melodies.
Now an integral part of the ever-expanding Ferret Music family, 36 Crazyfists is set to enter the studio with guitarist Steve Holt at the helm to record the followup to the fan-beloved Rest Inside the Flames.

You'll struggle to find anything but a glowing review of 36 Crazyfists' debut album, 2001's Bitterness The Star, and yet it's more than likely that they've never appeared on your musical radar screen, even if metal and hardcore are your cups of Earl Grey.
Maybe it's the name (36 Crazyfists doesn't exactly roll off the tongue), or perhaps it's the fact that they come from a place not associated with hype, musical "scenes" and headline-grabbing party action - Alaska.
And the second half is just as accomplished as the first, with a clever down-tempo mood change within the thrashy workout of With Nothing Underneath, some Funeral For A Friend-sized stomp in the delighfully-titled Installing The Catheter, and a haunting closing number, Waterhaul.

From the first second you hear the curlicue twang of Steve Holt’s opening guitar hook, it’s obvious that on 36 Crazyfists’ fourth studio effort, The Tide and its Takers, everything’s just more of the same.
The bottom line here is that you can hand it to 36 Crazyfists to sticking to their trademark tricks, or you can criticize them for failing to ever try anything different.
36 Crazyfists has always been able to provoke that same kind of mosh pit sentimentality in its fans.

Hardcore-infested contemporary metal from Alaska, of all places, tackling all the usual subjects ranging from angst to love gone wrong, yet it's much better and far more engaging than you'd probably expect.
At the Drive-In will be sorely missed, but less so now that we have 36 Crazyfists, who do the same thing without really sounding anything like them.
The album opens with the trashy, razor sharp "Turns To Ashes," and what's immediately, blatantly obvious is that not only are 36 Crazyfists the real deal -- because you can't fake energy like this -- they also write quite brilliant choruses that'll stay stuck in your head forever.

 36 CRAZYFISTS 2000/1999 Demos REVIEW
Much like many of the other Roadrunner signings, 36 CRAZYFISTS (now based in Portland, Oregon) specialize in a sound that has "nu-metal" written all over it, featuring a direction that was clearly inspired in part by the DEFTONES, but one that has thankfully been expanded upon to include elements that suggest a more individual style.
Undoubtedly the most refreshing aspect of the group's sound is the vocal approach of frontman Brock Lindow, who possesses a unique style that brings to mind everyone from the DEFTONES' Chino Moreno to ACID BATH's Dax Riggs, but with a personality and character all his own.
Like many up-and-coming groups, 36 CRAZYFISTS have not yet fully mastered the art of songwriting, and several of their early compositions suggest an unfamiliarity with the concept of writing chorus-based songs that stick in the listener's head upon the initial listen.

Never overly bombastic or lost behind Holt and Lindow, Whitney and Noonan set the pace and keep 36 Crazyfists the lean, mean, all-powerful kick-to-the-gut rock machine that they are.

Alaska hasn't produced much in the way of metal bands over the years, with perhaps only the 80's band Pandemonium having significant Alaskan heritage.
36 Crazyfists is another such band, the quartet taking their name from a Jackie Chan movie and eventually relocating to Oregon before recording their first album, Bitterness The Star, in 2002, with A Snow Capped Romance released two years later.
The band straddles the line between harder nu-metal and the current metalcore rage, with a healthy dose of emo thrown into the mix, and vocals alternating between a melodic side and the usual monotonic hardcore blasts.
